ST_Catchov Posted December 17, 2020 Posted December 17, 2020 Good. No more mud on my RFC service boots upon alighting after a controlled crash.
NO.20_W_M_Thomson Posted December 17, 2020 Posted December 17, 2020 So now we can place air fields at any location?
JG1_Vonrd Posted December 17, 2020 Posted December 17, 2020 Did some quick tests and didn't try all planes. Tested on Arras map. Entente planes are doable for off field landings. Bristol - a bit wobbly but no real problem (pitch trim helps) and no damage. Spad - same wobbly but no issues or damage. Se5 - easiest of all. (again... pitch trim) absolutely no issues. Central planes... much more problematic. CL2 - numerous attempts all resulted in wingtip damage due to wallow on roll out. Tried power on, off, blasts of power to no avail. Take-off barely possible with wingtips sheared off but what's the point? Pfalz - again, wobbly on rollout but no damage. It would not begin take-off roll unless I wagged the rudder. VERY sluggish to gain speed and all the while wings were waggling... but no damage and I made it off. DVIIF - borked the wingtips every time in numerous attempts. It may be to my ineptitude but I'm actually pretty good at off field landings and have done it many times in ROF FIF. I'd be interested to hear what others have noted in testing.

I reported that during test and they will adjust those planes in the future. 2
Cynic_Al Posted December 17, 2020 Posted December 17, 2020 I consider the rolling resistance now acceptable for takeoff runs, but the terrain is still tricky and great care in airfield location will still be needed. Still I suppose we should be grateful - we report a problem and in the blink of 29 months it's fixed. 2
Zooropa_Fly Posted December 22, 2020 Posted December 22, 2020 Having placed AF's on 'normal' in-game ground since the last update - I'm struggling to notice much difference between now and how it was, other than the visual effect on the wheels. All the ground textures seem the same - little pot holes everywhere. Planes roll quite violently and the nose bobs up and down, making picking up enough speed for take off a possible issue. So I was just wondering if anyone had noticed an improvement in this regard, or not ? A solution would be to give us an empty patch of airfield ground in the editor that could be placed on a map. S!
J99_Sizzlorr Posted December 22, 2020 Posted December 22, 2020 (edited) Yes planes don't clipp half way through the ground getting damaged in the process anymore. If you set the graphic option for rough terrain on high you are able to see more bumps and pot holes on the ground. It really is a diffrence between night and day. Landing and taking off now really depends on the ground of your choice. Not every agricultural field is the same on the Arras map. There are fields that still are not recomended for taking off or landing there. But on other fields it is doable more so with the last patch. Edited December 22, 2020 by J99_Sizzlorr 1
