I've said "never" a few times... but now I'm thinking what the hell ?

As mainly a ww1 flyer it's maybe time I at least experienced this sh*t.

So the Rift S is down to £299 !

Had my interest before noticing it's owned by f*c*b**k. Pretty much rules me out of spending any money there, unless I pick up a 2nd hand one.

However - is it true you have to create a FB a/c to use it ?

Next thing caught my attention was the Vive Pro.

A step up I think from the rift, but I'm thinking my system might just be able to handle it.

Also doesn't seem to need WIN 10.

Expensive relative to it's predecessor, but the differences look like they're worth having.. ?

FoV would be high priority for me, so can anyone recommend something not killer expensive that would expand on 110 deg. ?

Since I'm only interested in using it for flying - I assume I don't need base units and hand thingy's ?

System specs : WIN 7 PRO 64 BIT  /  INTEL i5-7600K CPU @ 3.80GHz   /   16.0 GB RAM   /    NVIDIA gtx 1070

Any advice appreciated,

Cheers.

WWI stuff is insane in VR.  Phenomenal fun and a lot more immersive and visually rewarding than 2D.

No idea about the FB but but as an intro the Rift S sounds a good thing for you.  There may even be some second hand ones coming up as people switch to the G2.  The Index would be a great alternative but it costs more.

Tracking-wise you have external sensors or inside-out tracking (no external sensors).  I think the Rift S is inside out.

Forget about any other headset apart from a Reverb G2 for simming, it really is that good even on a medium weight rig.

I wouldn't get too hung up on the FOV, especially as the real WW1 pilots used goggles that create a similar quality of view. In use you stop noticing it anyway, attention is focussed on what's directly ahead. Sure, real peripheral vision is nice but real-life goggles anyway, etc.

One good thing about coming from an earlier 'potato' headset is one really appreciates the quantum leap in the latest & greatest (G2 in my case).

I don't suppose you're down the road from me, I'd lend you my old Rift for a taster.

Yes all new Oculus account require Facebook currently no matter the headset.

Ok, the G2 is sounding the business !

It requires Win 10 - for the mixed reality feature - does anyone know if it'll still run on Win 7 for simming ?

If I have to get Win 10 I probably will.

So if I went G2 does anyone else have any comment on if I'd be playing roulette with unusable performance ?

Can you operate at reduced resolutions ?

Cheers for the comments so far.

edit :- That's Oculus out of the running !

You can't use it with Win7, you need Win10.

Getting a G2 now may be tough. Lots of people who ordered them back in August still haven't got theirs yet.

Also, besides personal concerns about FB, the Rift S has been a pretty darn good HMD for IL-2. With the latest spotting updates it's actually been pretty great.

Rift S is a fine buy.

If simming is your only concern, a slightly leftfield option is a second hand Vive Cosmos. Probably get one for the same price as a new Rift (I did). Higher res than the a Rift S, hence better visuals, better refresh rate, better build quality too.

The main criticism of the Cosmos, sub par controller tracking, is simply not an issue for a flight or driving sim where the controllers are not used.

But having said all that, you can't go wrong with the Rift S... and it's a bit less demanding to run than the Vive.

I think you want to try that VR thing with WWI.

You don´t want facebook: discard Rift CV1 and RiftS

you don´t want W10: discard all WMR devices including G1, G2, Index

I would upgrade to win10 if I were you.
