Robli Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 I have read a lot how curved monitors make games more immersive and am considering if I should get one. Does anyone here use a curved monitor and what are your experiences and feelings of it? I understand the natural feeling of a curve, when sitting at the center of the circle, but how about, when you move your head from side to side, left or right, (TrackIR) to look a closer look at an instrument in the corner of a front panel or looking over your shoulder or over cockpit side frame etc? Does your view get distorted in situations like that? Any other experiences or things to consider, pro and con, about having a curved monitor?
Remontti Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 I have Acer Predator x34 ultrawide monitor. It is curved but the curvature is very light. So it is not like center of a circle at all. It's great monitor. The extra width brings sensation of speed and immersion. But you lose a bit of vertical visibility. I don't think curvature brings you distortions. In my monitor the image near sides is bit distorted (stretched) with maximum field of view. Doesn't trouble me at all. I'm usually looking at center part of the monitor. Head tracking is set to somewhat sensitive so I'm hardly ever looking at ends of the screen.
grcurmudgeon Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 (edited) My Dell ultra wide with a slight curve is really nice. When doing work it's nice to either have two windows side-by-side, or one window that is truly centered with no bezel running down the middle. I did play with my TrackIR head tracking to get sensitivities right for left/right vs up/down. Edited December 8, 2020 by grcurmudgeon
DragonDaddy Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 I recently went from a 27” flat screen to 34” ultrawide with a moderate curve (LG34GN850B). I have experienced no negative effects anywhere. Trakir works as well as on the 27”, no distortion anywhere on the screen. Regarding the experience: A much better upgrade than I expected. The action seems more up-close and dramatic. Spotting is a little easier. The level of immersion has been raised considerably. I’ll never go back to a flat screen or smaller monitor.
Voyager Posted December 8, 2020 Posted December 8, 2020 The curve is good for super wide monitors. I Ed sayings triple monitor setup on my desktop for a long time, and I found that I needed to angle in the wing monitors because otherwise the ends were to far away for good viewing. I recently replaced the set with a single 49" curved monitor, and it is overall better. Mine has a pretty high curvature, but it is actually less than the effective curve I had set up on my trio of monitors earlier. Once you've got it angled right I don't notice much distortion. For drafting or artwork, you probably want to stick with a flat IPS panel, but curved it good for everything else.
Bernard_IV Posted December 9, 2020 Posted December 9, 2020 Ultrawide is great. I have the x34 and love mine. For RPG games it is amazing. I fly with a Reverb G2.
Robli Posted December 9, 2020 Author Posted December 9, 2020 Thanks for answers. I will give it a try.
