VikingFjord Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 i have been playing rise of flight for sometime now..and as i jump over too il2 naturally there will be more buttons as the planes are more complicatedjust look at the Stuka it has a ton of buttons to do the operationi just cant find enough buttons on my stick to map them all (Mixture,Cooling system,Rpm,Dive brakes ect.)and i never seem to manage to remember all the combinations..what do ppl do? im using Logitech 3d Extreme Pro
Sim Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 One tip is that you can assign another function to the same joystick button if you combine it with Ctrl/Shift/Alt keyboard modifier. Right now I use Ctrl key for all the extra less frequently used commands.
-Roy-Cheesy-Chops Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 i donno either... having same issue here too..tempted to rig up extra keyboard for some commands.. im using a f.l.y 5 and seitek throttle guad???bit stuck myself??
BlitzPig_EL Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 One of the more inconvenient truths of combat flight simulation is that it is very equipment intensive. Get yourself a separate throttle quadrant and set of rudder pedals in addition to your joystick. Or, get an add on button bay/numpad. However, as you progress in combat flight simulation you will find that a HOTAS controller set up will be well worth the investment. 1
VikingFjord Posted May 24, 2014 Author Posted May 24, 2014 back in 97 when i started with flight simulator a simple logitech stick would workbut later years it gotten more and more intense with buttons and stuff to doand thats just the nature of the progress i start to realize that a simple logitech stick isnt good enough no moreso im looking to get some type of system like a HOTAS where engine and wing systems where separatedand for some reasons i like switches better then buttons..i have seen those sticks and sytems where things like gear and flaps are listed with names on iti guess im too old fashioned and need a system upgrade to keep upany suggestions?
Sokol1 Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 At least one these (~50$) http://www.saitek.com/uk/prod/quad.html Sokol1
VikingFjord Posted May 24, 2014 Author Posted May 24, 2014 that one looks nice to controll Mixture and cooling systems with perhaps combine it with a X55 Rhino HOTAS?
Sokol1 Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 Good idea, see this arrange: http://www.sas1946.com/main/index.php?topic=25156.36 Sokol1
VikingFjord Posted May 25, 2014 Author Posted May 25, 2014 that system was boss! :D but what should i pick? Saitek X55 or Thrustmaster Hotas Warthog?
II/JG17_HerrMurf Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 I'm a Warthog and Trak iR5 guy. There is no looking back or regrets here. I hear the TM 16000 is a good mid range stick as well but have not used it.
Matt Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 (edited) The Warthogs throttle only has 3 axes (the X55 seems to have 6) and many of the switches are permanent (they stay in one position and are not momentary), which doesn't work that well for BoS and will require you to make use of the script editor. So I think the layout of the X55 might work better in BoS. I've personally bound radiator, oil cooler and cowling flaps all to the grey lever on the Warthos throttle. So I control them together at the same time. It seems to be working alright and the disadvantages of that solution (for instance I can't just open the oil cooler when the oil gets too hot) seem to get out weighted by the advantage of only having one lever to fiddle around with (especially during combat). I've also bound the adjustable stabilizer to that lever, because it only works in the 109 and it doesn't have manual control of the radiator yet. Then I use the left throttle for set the RPM in the soviet planes and the Stuka and the right lever for throttle. I control mixture with the grey hat switch on the stick. That's how I control the possible axes commands. Edited May 25, 2014 by Matt
VikingFjord Posted May 25, 2014 Author Posted May 25, 2014 Great setup Matt! i think i will go for the combination of Trackir 5 and warthog sticki like it more and more and it seems like a fine setup to upgrade too
dburne Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 Great setup Matt! i think i will go for the combination of Trackir 5 and warthog stick i like it more and more and it seems like a fine setup to upgrade too It is a fantastic setup, and if your up to the learning curve taking the time to learn to work with the Script Editor for TARGET is well worth it, really allows one to do a lot with the controller setup. Because of the lack of number of axis on the throttle, I added a CH Throttle Quadrant to my setup as well to give me more axis , plus more buttons as well - so I put my engine management ( oil, water, rad, prop pitch) on the CH axis. I use the left throttle on the Warthog for mixture.
II/JG17_HerrMurf Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 Matt, I put the adjustable stabilizer on the hat with trim as they are similar functions. Left throttle for prop pitch. I never would have thought to put all of the cooling functions on the same axis. Brilliant..............gotta go change some settings now
Matt Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 (edited) I'm using the trim hat for the elevator trim and rudder trim controls of the non-109 planes (i'm not using aileron trim at all btw). I would have no problem using the trim hat for the adjustable stabilizer aswell (in fact i might just do in the future), but as long as the grey lever is not used for anything else when flying the 109, it would be a bit of a waste of that very handy lever. Of course for the 190, i would use the same setup. BTW, with grey hat switch, which i use for the mixture, i mean the CMS switch. Up is rich, down is lean and pressing the button will switch auto-mixture on and off (if we ever get a plane that supports that). I'm using the mic switch in a similar matter for the prop pitch on the 109. Forward mean fine pitch, backward means coarse pitch and pushing that button in switches between manual and automatic prop pitch. Flaps are on the speed brake switch, making it easy to make sure that the flaps are in after take-off (the forward position is permanently). I'm very happy with my setup for now. However, i'm still not using any of the two way permament switches, simply because most controls i would use for that (undercarriage, supercharger, dive brake, bomb doors, landing light, nav lights etc.) are just on/off commands and i would hate to accidentially switch the gear from down to up position, just because the switch was not in the correct position when i spawned on the runway.
