Falcon41 Posted December 1, 2020 Posted December 1, 2020 (edited) Is there any way when approaching an airfield to ask for permission to land? Additionally, when on a mission and you’ve exhausted your ammo and/or fuel, how do you let your flight your returning to base? Edited December 1, 2020 by Falcon41

You could open the radio menu and ask the base for a heading home. I see a more limited menu in this game. Am I missing something? I do have a few buttons set up for cover me, attack air, ground set up. But I do admit to getting lost. a few times.
vonGraf Posted December 1, 2020 Posted December 1, 2020 There are not so many orders/radio calls. But 'return to base' is there. 'Heading home' not. Old IL-2 was better in this hindsight.
Yogiflight Posted December 1, 2020 Posted December 1, 2020 Unfortunately no request for permission to land. The informations to your flight also only work when you are the flightleader. When you are a wingman yourself, you have no possibility to communicate with anybody. And be careful with 'Return to base', because this command will take your flight out of game. They will do exactly what you ordered and nothing else. Enemies can beat them down with a wet blanket, as they won't do anything to defend themselves, not to talk about them helping you. 2
PatrickAWlson Posted December 1, 2020 Posted December 1, 2020 What is interesting is that if you tell your flight to go home they will individually ask for permission to land. Also, if you get to the point where you trigger the landing MCU then your entire flight will be given permission one at a time. In the end it looks like the landing handler code is set up to land your flight in formation order. Further looks like there are two triggers to activate it: triggering the landing MCU or giving the "go home" command to the flight. It may or may not be trivial to handle individual landing requests that cause a flight to land out of order, but it looks like that is what would have to be done.
Zeev Posted December 1, 2020 Posted December 1, 2020 Shouldnt the pilot you are playing as request landing if you approach the airfield and turn on the landing lights?

Not that it's a bad idea, but I think you are asking for a level of awareness that does not exist in the game today. The code seems to want to land the flight in order. That's all it seems to know how to do at this point. Changing the code to handle different variations of landing pattern might not be easy to do or viewed as worth doing. Not that it wouldn't be nice to have, but I'm guessing that this is not that high on the priority queue.
Yogiflight Posted December 1, 2020 Posted December 1, 2020 In fact you can land whenever you want. As long as there is no other aircraft in the final approach or on the runway, you will get the permission to land, when you are in final approach. 1
ightenhill Posted December 20, 2020 Posted December 20, 2020 what exactly triggers this - I have circled patiently for everyone to clear the runway and then approached correctly but despite flares flying off in every direction from the tower I land taxi and end only to be given a fail for the day..

It doesn't work always, but usually. 9 hours ago, ightenhill said: and end only to be given a fail for the day.. I guess you are talking about the game's career mode missions? If your mission fails, it might correlate with you not getting clearance for landing. What I noticed, when flying back to base before my flight returns is, there is no white landing cross at the runway, but I am not sure if there also is no clearance call out on radio. If your mission is failed, then because you were not successful with your mission goal or you returned to base before the mission wanted you to. If you want the mission to be successful, either RTB with your flight or look at the map, if there is a green 'Misson complete' (or a writing like this) at your 'action point'.
Pikestance Posted December 21, 2020 Posted December 21, 2020 When I have played career mode and I make an approach, it does state that I request permission to land and I always get clearance. When you escort you cannot land until the group you are escorting began the process of landing.

If you are escorting friendlies they may be landing at their own base, so you may be landing at the wrong airfield. The system calls any landing at the "wrong" airfield a fail. Others have complained about this as it was not unusual for a damaged a/c to land at another base in an "emergency", but that is how the system is set up--you must land at your designated strip (usually the one you took off from).
