Oculus Rift S - Is it a good time to jump into VR?

With all the cool kids moving on to greener pastures, it seems that there are quite a number of second hand Rift S to be found here for around 300 € (new its around 450 €).

Do you guys think this would be a good entry point to VR in il2? I would pair it with one of the new mid-range cards that should arrive (big question mark) in Q1 2021.

I would definitely say that it's a great time to get into VR, but personally I would never buy a Rift S (or any other VR HMD) second hand.

For one thing, it's something you wear for long periods on your face, often getting hot and sweaty. It would be like using someone else's sweatband which they've never washed. You can get replacement pads for the actual HMD for silly prices, but you can't seem to get replacements for the big pads at the front or rear of the headband. I'm not a hygiene freak by any means, but I'm well aware of how manky these areas become while playing some of the more popular games. Yuck.

Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, VR gear is very easy to damage by it's nature. While simming is pretty sedate, other games have you jumping around the room like an idiot. Cables get stepped on damaging connectors, headsets can fall off and hit the floor, controllers can be swung straight into walls and other objects you forgot were there. People may have also used various substances they shouldn't have to clean the delicate lenses, resulting in damage which blurs the image.

Put simply, I don't think it's worth the risk. You can pay 300Euro for a second-hand headset which has zero warranty and may have been abused, or you can pay an extra 100Euro or so and get one brand new with full warranty and peace of mind.

Apart from my graphics card,  my SSD and my GVL throttle unit,  everything I've got is second-hand.:)

I bought a second hand Rift CV1 about two years ago via Ebay.  Absolute bargain and has been ultra reliable.  It came with a very handy Microsoft wireless Xbox controller which I use in Tank Crew and Microsoft Flight Sim 2020.

I also sit on an office chair and frequently run over the cables, clean the lenses by breathing on them and then polishing them with my glasses cloth and I'm one of those foolish people who buy those really cheap power supplies off Ebay too.:o:

Sweaty headbands?  DILLIGAF:biggrin:

I'm not too sure I'd buy a second hand Reverb though........

Take it easy with that CV1 cable, they are no longer available.

I have a spare CV1 Cable new still in wrapper that I never needed,  tempted to put it up on Ebay for an auction to see what I might get for it.

I've got plenty of used gear locally so its gonna be easy to check them out before buying. But the quest 2 new is about the same price...if only a way to root them was found I'd buy one immediately.

i cant over recommend the Q2.

its not *the* perfect VR headset of all time, but if anyone offered me a CV1, S, or Q2 id instagrab the q2.

Also most folk wont *need* the 256 one, even if it seems the way to go. Grab the 64 and spend the extra on the elite strap with battery (which isnt essential either)

Yeah the only reason one might need the 256GB version would be if they got into the stand alone games, and I am sure many more higher quality ones will be coming out for the Quest 2. Which take more space.

One of my squadmates was recently unable to fly for about 10 days because his cable was damaged and I think he said that was the second cable so it is a risk.

Yeah, for me it's between a Rift S and a Quest 2.  I'm leaning to the Quest especially as I can get a big discount on a new one through a family connection:)

Rift S is great piece of hw, simple and reliable, easy to setup and use!

But new quest 2 seems way better deal at the moment, price should be somewhat the same and even if it's 100€ pricier i'd go for it....better resolution and way less screen door effect!

If you're going to get new gpu in a few months than i'd rather wait by then, quest 2 will come in stock by then and second hand rift s price might go down even further.

Don't buy it now to sit unused, get gpu and VR at the same time......IMO!

Yep! As long as they work for the John Lewis partnership and get twenty percent off electricals?

I think I’m going for a Quest 2. However, I’m thinking Painless....?
