PantsPilot Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 Apologies if this has already been covered but are there any plans to issue a summer/autumn map of this battlefield to recreate the initial period of the campaign. Such would allow the addition of aircraft like the I-16, Yak 7 and Su-2 for example more effectively. I believe the Stalingrad campaign actually began in July 1942. Can somebody hoover all that snow up and stick some leaves on the trees in other words!! 2
Bearcat Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 Hopefully someday relatively soon.. but first they have to finish the sim and see how it sells.
Matt Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 I still think it's something modders could take care off. Assuming that a mods-on mode will be available in BoS, I think I will give retexturing a try.
83_Gen_Jeroen Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 When the first snow started to fall, the germans were allready in the city, so a green autumn map could be a possiblity. I think there is a risk that (some) players will get bored by all the snow, so I hope some green maps will also be there in the end.
SYN_Vander Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 (edited) Hopefully someday relatively soon.. but first they have to finish the sim and see how it sells.True! Then again, I'm sure a "green" version would actually help sales quite a bit! But it's all about balancing time, resources and scope.... Edited May 23, 2014 by SYN_Vander 1
1PL-Banzai-1Esk Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 Coming from Rise of Flight I believe that summer map will unveil true beauty of BoS. Autumn map with all the warm colours would be great as well. I agree with Vander , summer map would certainly boost sales , maybe someday we will also see Stalingrad before it was bombed to bits.

Wonder, as a non programmer, what kind of coding would there have to be done? - Leaves, "obvious" hit to the fps but could RoF trees/base data be implemented with relative ease? - Grass/Ground, could the old data sets be reused to what extent? - Water? RoF water looked ok-ish, so.. Not milking any answers from the dev team, but for us muppets and laymen, what kind of job is it generally to import "old" textures? Like, the base engine is same(?) but I guess it is not only drag and drop kind of thing? Coders, any takes? Or, could the fantasy island map be implemented directly or would it need a lot of converting & redoing things? As said, this is only a regular-non-coding asshat thinking aloud. Just curious what kind of issues the developers of any game have to go through to get their stuff done? Edited May 23, 2014 by Wind

Just curious what kind of issues the developers of any game have to go through to get their stuff done? Not a coder but I've seen inside and done modding with several games in the past including some forays into IL-2 1946s map making processes. Changing the map to summer shouldn't be the most difficult thing to do. The elevation stuff is already done and if they have materials setup in a similar way to how IL-2 1946 works then for some pieces its just a matter of duplicating the basic parameters and then swapping textures out. There will be programming and art work to do and I'm curious if they would keep the bombed out Stalingrad or do a version of Stalingrad before being bombed out. There was heavy fighting on the map we already have from June or even earlier. So a small to medium sized job. Certainly not just throwing a switch. But the fundamentals like roads, rail ,airbases, etc. wouldn't change all that much. My guess? Seeing as the I-16 has been mentioned and it was very much fighting on the frontline in the summer and autumn of 1942... we could see a package deal with the I-16, IAR, perhaps a Yak-7B, Su2, MC200, MC202 or even a P-40 along with a summer or autumn map. That would be a very nice content update built directly on the Battle of Stalingrad theme.

Not quite, we're talking August when the Germans reached the city... and we'd want to be able fight the Germans all the way as they advanced as well...
ShamrockOneFive Posted May 25, 2014 Posted May 25, 2014 109E - I16 Could work. Some Jabo units were still using the Bf109E in the lead-up to the battle.

Yes P-40's should be there as well, according to Christer Bergstrom's volume on Stalingrad in the air war on the eastern front; VVS loss records over Stalingrad in September 1942 list 5 "Kittyhawks" lost, presumably these are P-40E's originally designated for the RAF? Incidentally 46 Yak 7B's were listed lost in combat that month so these are a more significant aircraft on this front. On the Luftwaffe side the main absentee from the game is the Ju-88. Stalingrad does represent a good variety of aircraft so I am glad that they picked it as a theatre to represent. It's an interesting scenario from an aviation standpoint as well as one of those crucial turning points in the war. Yes, there were some decent numbers of Yak-7Bs in the battle both during the summer and winter portions of the battle. Sounds like an interesting book. ISBN or Amazon link?

MolotoK Posted May 29, 2014 Posted May 29, 2014 Please rather sooner than later. I have not spent much time with the beta yet, but I'm already bored to death with the endless white

Great! And it's available on the Amazon.ca store as well although not for quite as good a price. I'll keep an eye on it. Every so often I'll splurge on a good WWII source. I bought all three of the hardcovers on the RAF 2nd Tactical Airforce by Christopher Shores which is extremely detailed and not for everyone but I absolutely loved those. This looks like a similar type of book. Thanks again for the link! Please rather sooner than later. I have not spent much time with the beta yet, but I'm already bored to death with the endless white It's like real winter... like this past winter where the snow storms wouldn't stop and I was shovelling 20cm worth of the damn stuff every other day At least the virtual stuff stays shovelled on its own.

oneeyeddog Posted May 30, 2014 Posted May 30, 2014 Thanks for the book recommendations Arnaud_Amaury and Pants Pilot. I'm currently reading 'Stopped at Stalingrad; The Luftwaffe and hitlers defeat in the East 1942-43'. Published in 1998, 65 five star reviews and available used on Amazon for < $20. I absolutely love Amazon Prime just as a source for used books.
1CGS LukeFF Posted May 31, 2014 1CGS Posted May 31, 2014 Thanks for the tip! Thank you, your order has been placed. I have a copy of it and his companion book on Kursk, and yes, they are both very good. The author essentially picks up where he left off with the high-quality Black Cross / Red Star books.

I just can't help myself lol, $15.80 new with 2 day Prime delivery, I too love that Prime service and I buy a LOT of stuff to justify the yearly fee . I'm currently about half way through Vol 3 of Black Cross/Red Star which I picked up for $15.50 with Prime delivery. Pretty fact dense reading, but I'll sure try to find the rest of the series if I can do so at a reasonable price...
