Wing airfoil thickness is a dead give away.

BON typhoon from previous update below.

What the guys above said.  Here are some ways to tell the difference.

Cannons.  The Typhoon has very obvious protruding cannons.

Wing thickness.  The Typhoon has thicker wings

Nose length.  The Typhoon has a shorter nose as measured form the leading edge of the wings

Canopy position.  The Typhoon has the canopy position slightly more forward.

The car door Typhoon was the Mk Ia, the bubble canopy was introduces in the Mk 1b.

Unfortunately, a lot of websites repeat the very utterly poorly researched line that Tempests used rockets during the war. Not a single Tempest used rockets operationally during the conflict, and any photos you do see of them are either from testing in the UK or postwar photos. Only a handful of ground attack missions were ever flown by Tempests armed with bombs, and all those were flown in May 1945.

@ jollyjack: if you see a random photo posted on Pinterest, or anywhere else other than a website where people are very likely to have a clue what they are talking about, assume, unless you know otherwise, that the caption is wrong.

Thick, straight'ish wing and four long gun barrels, wide apart => Typhoon

Thin elliptical wing and short gun barrels, closely together or no gun barrels sticking out at all => Tempest

Keep in mind that the Typhoon may have:

- 12 .303 guns (Typhoon IA)

- 4 20mm guns (Typhoon IB)

- framed car-door cockpit

- bubble canopy

- three blade prop

- four blade prop

I have never seen a car-door variant with a four blade prop.

No. The "a" and "b" only denote the armament. Just like in the Spitfire or the Hurricane.
