10x Hurricane Giveaway

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Dear all,

inspired by Shamrock and Reflected's lovely gesture, I have 10 of the new Hurris to give away as a gift. This is because it is a fantastic module and people really should have the chance to fly it, but also because the same day that I read that Tom Weiss had died my own uncle (ex-RAAF Vampire pilot) concidently passed away.

So as a S! to Tom and my uncle but also as a thanks to the team for yet another wonderful addition, I am happy to gift these. 2020 has been a right bugger of a year and I know a lot of people are struggling, so please only ask if this is genuinely something you would like rather than simply an item of interest that becomes a hanger-queen.

PM and I'll pass on the code.

Keep flying, all, and stay safe.

OK. Sorry everyone - they have been got faster than an RAF Vic formation bounced by a veteran 109 schwarm.

See below ?

OK, that was too quick, so I will offer another 5 Hurris but rather than it being a race to the PM button, the latter 5 are premised on a Fighter Command / Hurricane / Hawker quiz. Correct answers receive a Hurricane. Or something.

1) What modification was added to the Hurricane in an effort to address the suspected front fuel tank fire?

2) What little exercise did 'Sailor' Malan do to improve his contact spotting?

3) What nasty surprise did III/KG76 meet in their 18th August attack on Kenley?

4) Which pilot was the first - or one of the first recorded - to ditch successfully a Typhoon in the Channel?

5) Which RAF Squadron (recently now disbanded) kept a memento to the Hurricane as its badge?

1. Hawker retrofit the fuselage tanks of Hurricanes with a fire-resistant material called "Linatex" as a matter of priority.

I dont know is one answear enough or do I need to know them all.

3.You speak in the three about the Hardest day

Nine Dornier Do17 bombers of the 9th Staffel took off from Cormeilles-En-Vexin, North of Paris, shortly before Midday on 18th August, 1940. RAF Kenley was their target. The unit specialised in low-level attacks.

The raiders were spotted by Naval patrol boats and Observer Post K3 at Beachy Head, though it wasn’t clear at that stage that Kenley was the target. The Observer Corps tracked the raid and Kenley was ready for the attackers as they approached.

The bombers each carried 20 x 110lb bombs fitted with a new fuse, set to detonate when released from 50ft or higher. They flew so low over Kenley that many of these bombs failed to go off.

The raid itself lasted no more than five minutes; between 1.22pm and 1.27pm on Sunday lunchtime.

  • The 9th Staffel lost eight out of forty aircrew.
  • Five were taken Prisoner of War. Three were wounded.
  • Four of the Dornier Do17’s were destroyed. The rest were damaged.
  • Only two managed to return to their base at Cormeilles-En-Vexin.

As the bombers worked over the airfield, Aircraftman D. Roberts waited for them on the northern boundary with his parachute-and-cable launchers. Three Do 17s were heading towards him, climbing slowly. When they were in range he fired the cables. Nine rockets flew upwards. Wilhelm Raab saw the rockets go up. Although he did not understand what they were, he banked the Do 17 to avoid the lines of smoke that may or may not have concealed something. Because the Dornier banked, one of the cables that hit his bomber slid off the wing before the lower parachute had time to deploy. Pilot Petersen's Dornier was not that lucky. Already on fire it ran into the cable which dragged it out of the sky. The Do 17 crashed killing all five crewmen.[66] Oberleutnant Rudolf Lamberty (carrying Joachim Roth) also managed to avoid a collision, but before he could do so ground fire hit his Dornier destroying the fuel tanks. The bomber caught fire and he was barely able to keep control.[67] Eventually it crash-landed at Leaves Green in Kent after being shot down by No. 111 Squadron Hurricanes.[63] Roth was killed, but Lamberty survived with burns.[68]

3) What nasty surprise did III/KG76 meet in their 18th August attack on Kenley?

Squadron no. 111 hurricaines at treetop level waiting for them who then chased them down hedgehopping all the way; only one bomber made it back to it's base in one piece.

2) Not strictly spotting, but in case I've misunderstood, Malan was known to be seen careening about the perimeter of the airfield hanging out the back of a jeep and downing small game with a double barrel shotgun. Whether this truly constituted practice for a man known to be an instinctual shot is another question, but interesting all the same!

Obviously if I *have* misunderstood, hard luck and may the right answer win!

1) What modification was added to the Hurricane in an effort to address the suspected front fuel tank fire?

Linatex

"When attacking Luftwaffe bombers, it was discovered that the Hurricane's fuel tanks were vulnerable to defensive machine gun fire. The greatest hazard was with the unprotected gravity-feed fuel tank in front of the cockpit which could rupture when hit, allowing a jet of flame to penetrate the cockpit through the instrument panel, causing serious burn injuries to the pilot. The wooden and fabric rear fuselage was also far more likely to catch fire than the metal fuselages of its contemporaries. This issue was of such concern to Air Vice Marshal Hugh Dowding that he had Hawker retrofit the fuselage tanks of Hurricanes with a fire-resistant material called "Linatex" as a matter of priority. The wing tanks had already been fitted with a covering of this sealant, but the fuselage tank was considered to be too small a target. Hurricanes were soon being modified at the rate of 75 per month. In one month of combat, 10 July 1940 to 11 August, defensive fire from bombers hit 25 Hurricanes and 25 Spitfires; as a result 11 Hurricanes were shot down compared with two Spitfires."

Yeah, maybe. I cancelled my Paypal after I was defrauded. I'll give it a bit then try again.

5) Which RAF Squadron (recently now disbanded) kept a memento to the Hurricane as its badge?

Now this is a very challenging one.  I have to admit I was not very well versed in RAF history but embarking on this challenge has helped me learn alot more!

Unfortunately I don't have a concrete answer but I do have a few guesses, as long of a shot as they may be ?

No. 85 Sqn RAF

85 Squadron Mosquito II DD742 Sq/Ldr. Sutton DFC

Transitioned to Hurricanes in Sept 1938, they participated in the battle for France and the Battle of Britain before beginning night fighter patrols in Oct of 1940 starting in the Hurricanes.  They would remain in the night fighting role throughout and after WW2.  No.85Sqn was disbanded most recently in 2011.

The Hexagon was the squadron logo dating back to WW1, and the black background symbolizes the night in which the squadron was historically most active.

No. 111 Squadron

No. 111 Squadron RAF - Wikipedia

No.111Sqn was the very first sqn equipped with Hurricanes in Jan 1938.  Their operational history included defensive operations over France and Dunkirk, participating in the first half of the BoB defending South East England.  The unit was withdrawn to Scotland in Sept 1940 for refitting.  The Sqn was disbanded in 2011 with the retirement of the Tornado F3 from RAF service.

The badge consists of two swords in saltire, a cross potent quadrat charged with three seaxes fesswise in pale. The cross in the badge signifies Palestine, its World War One area of operation, the seaxes signify Essex, and the swords London which it defended with Hurricanes during the BoB.

Other squadrons I found that might be of interest but not exactly anything concrete:

No. 208 Sqn RAF - Sphinx signify its base of operations in Egypt, where it began combat operations with Westland Lysanders and Hawker Hurricanes.  Last Disbanded 2016

No. 17 Sqn RAF - Gauntlet signifies the Gloster Gauntlet, predecessor to the Hurricane.

No. 504 Sqn RAF -  Has the Major Oak for its badge, everything I can find on the internet simply mentions its appropriate for a hurricane squadron but I cannot for the life of me figure out exactly why.  The squadron was also last disbanded in the 1950s and reactivated in 1999 so probably not this one.

Perhaps a clue in in order Marsh? ?

Crikey, that was a really good answer! I was actually going with No.6 Squadron, that when flying the Jaguar back in the ‘80s and used the ‘Flying tin-openers” as a badge in reference to their predecessors using the Hurri IID in the desert 1941-42.

But I cannot fault your submission. Would you like a Hurricane? As soon as I can get the bloody system to work.

For Malan, if people are interested, he used to stick a pin in a wall, walk back to his desk on the other side of the room then shut his eyes for 30 seconds (I presume to allow them to defocus), then look back back at the wall and try to zero in on the pin as fast as possible. He thought it good practice to go from looking at things close by to focussing on small objects in the distance, with a pin-head being the rough size of a distant contact several miles away.

Aw damn!!

I never woulda guessed No 6 Sqn, that definitely was a hard one.

Thats quite interesting!  I had no idea their nickname came from the hurricane IIds.

I would love a hurricane, perhaps I can get into some of that tin can opening action myself ?

I just wanna say I really loved your idea of making the giveaway a challenge of finding the answer to a quiz or riddle.  It simply makes it more interesting to learn about the history and trivia of the planes we love.  Hope this kinda thing catches on and becomes a trend, bravo ?
