First one is nearly ready, I just want to sort out the tail as it doesn't look right. Will get back to it tomorrow.

I really enjoyed doing this skin. I like the crudely applied camo and interesting colours. The colours work great as camo on the Russian maps which was a suprise and a bonus. Once the template comes out I will redo it to get a flatter sharper edged finish for the brown paint on metal at the front of the aircraft. Meanwhile I'll try and improve it for the winter 'white 14' paying more attention to whether the paint is being applied onto canvas or metal. I hope you like it as much as I do.

I am continuing to work on the skin as I find stuff that needs fixing and will post an update in due course before I start on the next one. I am also working my way through creating better panel lines adding rivets and generally improving it as it is worth the effort. Hopefully a template will show up at some point before I get finished. I also need to check if a bumpmap exists as that could be useful although I have no intention of modding it so no worries there. Any more info on the aircraft and original artist would be welcome as always.

Ok, I have made real progress on improving this skin further with the list of things that needed doing and this should be the final version. Sorry about the number of posts. 

 

I have managed to piece together and find enough information to restore the missing stuff mainly panel lines and rivets and I think you will be able to see a real difference now. I have also tried to show brush work with cleaner sharper edges on the metal at the front and to differentiate between cleaner newer panels and older ones. Still not as good as the artist's picture but maybe next one I'll nail it. Enjoy!

Have you made a template for it? Any tips on doing that? Just curious, was looking at making one for the C47 ...

Just get a hold of the dds files if they exists then create a layer on top and start copying the lines using the pen and brush tools. In photoshop mark a point then go to the end of the line hold down left shift and click again. Now you have a straight line. I don't have a template and by the time I get close to making one the official one will probably get released. Go to folder .../data/graphics/planes there you will find the bump map files. They are the closest thing you will get to a template at the moment. They need some manipulating, tidying, blending and also some cleaning up but that's all there is so far. I would venture at this juncture that you are jumping in the deep end starting with template creation. It is a slog. I have only ever made one template (completely including the panel lines) and it took weeks of constant error correcting and restarts. Like I said the bump maps are a great place to get things off the ground quickly but even then it takes a lot of patience before you get anything back out. Hope it helps and GL!

Here is the second of the pair.

 

There is some speculation that the aircraft belong to the 78 IAP and operated on the North-West sector of the Eastern Front. It appears in vol.5 of Red Star Black Cross. If anyone has this book maybe they could add some more detail.
