Confused_2018 Posted November 2, 2020 Posted November 2, 2020 Saw this article, and others, and wondered if it is possible/worthwhile? https://www.game-debate.com/news/28224/microsoft-has-made-it-easier-to-port-games-to-directx-12-with-open-source-layer If possible, what could be expected ?
Jade_Monkey Posted November 3, 2020 Posted November 3, 2020 Sounds good but i have yet to see a DX12 game that benefits greatly from it. Im not sure what the real change would be. Il2 runs really well in general. Would dx12 make a real difference such as actually enable large bomber formations?

Confused_2018 Posted November 3, 2020 Author Posted November 3, 2020 Here is a vid from 2018. I am sure that there are newer better resources. I remember reading in some of the new hardware threads that DX11 may be a choke point. Hopefully porting to DX12 could help? Now if we could just get someone to do this series of games and IL-2 1946! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BV64mdOCgZo
JamesJninFS Posted November 6, 2020 Posted November 6, 2020 (edited) Here's one thing to keep in mind, DX11 support extends to Windows 7, adding in DX12 would likely mean dropping support for 7 & 8. While most people playing are probably on 10 at this point I'm sure a good number are still on older systems, for this reason I highly doubt we'll see it be added. Confused_2018 Posted November 6, 2020 Author Posted November 6, 2020 Interesting point. I would like to point out that older systems that run 7 can only last so much longer though. *IF* steam can be used as any kind of metric, Win 10 seems to be the highest used o/s? https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/Steam-Hardware-Software-Survey-Welcome-to-Steam I wasnt expecting the devs to jump on it, but, I think eventually something will have to change in the game world. We now have systems that are able to handle so much more than what was possible even a few years ago. Game devs will have to adjust. No more of this single core/boost BS.

Sure 10's popular, and that applies to IL-2 as well, that doesn't mean IL-2's necessarily gonna have the same split as most games. The main thing I'd considers the Russia fanbase, I'd question how much they use 10 over 7, I guess it's probably way lower. Also anyone who's older in general is way more like likely to stick with older versions of Windows, and I think that's a larger demographic for IL-2 than most titles. Also I'd note we're still at a point when even Microsoft's own flight sim uses DX11 over 12, which I think shows that 11 still has a lot of life left in it..
