Gambit21 Posted October 28, 2020 Posted October 28, 2020 wife just sent me this link. Sabrent Drive Looks like a laptop drive to me - or plugs directly into the MB? I'm not up to speed on this yet...what's the deal? Are these any good? Have to hit the road, no time to research a bunch of drive stuff right now...was going to hold off on this question until later but she needs an answer from me.
Mitthrawnuruodo Posted October 28, 2020 Posted October 28, 2020 (edited) It's not specific to laptops. Check the particular computer for compatibility with M.2 SSDs - you'll need a M.2 slot on the mainboard or an adapter of some kind. Not all laptops have it. In general, M.2 NVMe SSDs are the preferred type for performance personal computing. Edited October 28, 2020 by Mitthrawnuruodo
Gambit21 Posted October 28, 2020 Author Posted October 28, 2020 This would be for a new desktop - new Mobo etc So sounds like this might be the way to go then.
Mitthrawnuruodo Posted October 28, 2020 Posted October 28, 2020 (edited) It'll plug directly into the M.2 socket on the motherboard. Most modern desktop motherboards will have at least one M.2 socket. It looks like that particular drive has good reviews, so I'd expect it to work reasonably well. However, note that you won't get the full performance unless your platform has PCIe 4.0 interface. Edited October 28, 2020 by Mitthrawnuruodo 1

Yeah I have two of them, m.2 Nvme drives. They are the latest thing I guess, though really not sure I see a difference between them and a regular SATA SSD which I have one of installed as well. I know my Windows 10 is pretty snappy and boots up to desktop pretty fast. 1
kestrel79 Posted October 29, 2020 Posted October 29, 2020 I have a similar hard drive to these, but a Western Digital Black branded one. I really like it, very easy to install since it goes right in your motherboard with no cables or anything pretty cool if you like a clean install. 1
dburne Posted October 29, 2020 Posted October 29, 2020 Just be aware oftentimes those M2. Nvme drives will disable some other PCIe lanes. Would need to check the motherboard manual to find out what it might affect. I know in my case it disabled a U2 port, which I don't use anyway so no big deal for me. 1
