I'm sorry if I missed your call. I was out being awesome.

My ride in the back of the Collings Foundation's P-51C. I was surprised by the short throws and stick pressure for even simple aileron rolls.

Pah! Who wants to ride in a lame P-51 anyway?

Looks like you had a whale of a time!

Looks like you had a ball, filmed on a Go-Pro?

The experience adds a whole lot of perspective to my flight sim addiction. And it was a kick in the pants on the fun side of the equation as well. As usual, I have to thank the wifey. It was her present to me.

@Georgio - yes Hero3 Black. It was considerably cheaper than the 3+ Black and rated higher in some respects. Mounted it on a head strap for forward view then edited it for length on the free GoPro software download.

welcome to the club mate

Did you enjoy the Gs? I'd like a go on a razorback, I bet it's quite a different feeling! I know you have no rear visibility, but how's the side view?

I'm 5'8", so side view is OK. If you are taller probably not so good. If I'd known I would have worn the GoPro scrunched down on my brow line for better video. We went up to 3.5'ish on the G. I'm probably going on an east block jet trainer this year as well. I'm friends with the pilot so it will be easier on the pocketbook. Gonna see if he can knock me out :)

mmmh I'm 6'1", I guess the side frame will be straight in my line of sight.. still, with enough fwd visibility you can have some good fun :-)

I wanted to use a GoPro on my next ride, the problem is that there isn't a lot of clearance over your head with the bubble canopy (unless you had a Texas "K" version, then it's bulgier). We have a couple of on board cameras, I will see if there's some decent footage to use and show.

We normally pull a tad more, lots of 6Gs, which is a true killer (it's called "energy fighter" for a reason!), but that's the fascinating thing of these warbirds: you can fly it as gently as a Cessna or as violently as a small jet!

The jet experience is gonna be cool and warmly recommended, but you'll see it will lack the same glamour of flying in a WW2 warbird.

hahahaha yeah

one thing to keep remember that a 5-6 g turn is nothing to them

he was chatting and breath like it nothing happens

unfortunately i got manage to get only one flight during my service in AF for 18 months

you feel pain to see them take off and landing see the cockpits and sit in there without actually flying

and you have an Anti-G suit on, you don't get that luxury on WW2 aircraft  ;)

I would like to try the difference someday!

I watched Yeager speak once. He said in 1945 they started to introduce the G-suit near the end of the war. He said the 109 could still out turn the P-51 as an airframe but the suits gave the American pilots an advantage in the G arena.

Anti-G suits were introduced as early as 1944, first with the cumbersome, water-filled Franks suit, then in September '44 it was the turn of the Bergen suit, which was air-operated. They weren't widely distributed though, and regular use both in the Air Force and Navy became standard only postwar.

Nonetheless, the pilots that used it soon benefited from it, whilst the Germans relied more on the seat configuration, with a laid back position and legs almost horizontal to better cope with high-G loads.

Are you wearing a helmet or headset? I used a GoPro headstrap with a headset and the camera mounts in the middle of your forehead. Clearance should not be an issue.

just a cap and headset normally, a helmet wouldn't fit. That might be an idea, gonna give it a try, my only concern is that when pulling Gs is gonna come off the forehead and land on my nose lol

Nope, rock solid. The headband also has a strap over the top and gripper print on the inside. Should be good.

Sweet vid mate, thanks for sharing! Interesting detail re. the Tokyo raid bombsight! Any idea what the deal is with that?

In all fairness the glazed nose of the A-26 offers a better mooning opportunity

That's Panchito -- http://www.warbirdregistry.org/b25registry/b25-4336074.html

The bombsight is based on this guy, I believe: http://weaponsman.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Bomb_Sight.jpg

The announcers commentary about Panchito usually covers the Doolittle raid. Flights are tax-deductible :-)

yup, what I meant is that AFAIK that sort of bombsight was used in the B-25s that took part to the Doolittle Raid to save weight, so I wonder if there was any specific reason why Panchito has it installed :-)
