New BOSWAR test Tonight (Monday 19 May 21:00 CET)

After our test last week we will try flying this for real.

 

It is dawn and we have 100 allied tanks attacking on a narrow front East towards Cambrai.

This is nearly the double of last weeks test so you should be able to see them as they cross no-mans land.

 

Against them are around 50 artillery pieces each with an ammunition truck so they should be easier to see.

 

So Central fliers need to defend artillery + kill tanks and the Allies vice versa.

 

This is a short relaxed campaign so you can land at your airfield and get more bombs. If you die you can rejoin as a gunner to give the 2 seaters a chance.

 

We have not tested this many shooting vehicles before in a big mission so let's see what performance is like.

Yes this is using Rise Of Flight to test and it will be Camels and Strutters instead of Yaks and IL2s but it will give us a  good idea of what will be possible with Stalingrad. It also gives our campaign management software a good practical exercise as the mission has been planned, generated and will be analysed using BOSWAR.

 

Now performance is a major concern in running these campaigns with a major groundwar component. We can't credibly play out the Battle Of Stalingrad with 3 T34s 2 Panzers and a Staff car. I am reasonably confident that we will get to some decent performance levels in Stalingrad. 

 

There are some important advantages of the ROF architecture and the often maligned Mission Editor when it comes to running big complex multi-user missions. 69.GIAP ran dozens and dozens of IL2 campaigns mainly using IL2 co-op mode and SEOW campaign software. It was not a perfect environment, a few vehicles too many and missions crashed to the desktop or locked solid and restarting a mission with 50 Human pilots takes 20-30 minutes each time.

 

The way we manage performance using the RoF/BoS architecture is different. Effectively we use the dogfight mission mode to run a co-op style mission. We set a typicaly 30 minute line up time during which the players connect (and we don't have to wait if someone is late they can turn up later and still connect). This means that the server strain to download missions skins etc. is spread over 30 minutes instead of 30 seconds. We also use that 30 minutes to progressively wake up the AI objects. For example if I have a moving train it will  be activated by a random time generation between 1-1800 seconds after mission launch, this spreads the load.  After that objects that have not been planned to move during the mission will be linked to complex triggers which will wake them up when a player comes within a set distance and we will send them back to sleep after a pause. This way if we have hundreds of objects in the mission maby only half or less are awake and using CPU and memory at any one time. Setting all this up and testing by hand in the mission editor is a big job, so the Boswar generates all your MCU triggers timers and links automaticaly. 

 

We are also using far more computing power than with IL2. For example in tonights test we are running on a hex core I7 on a professional data line, big graphics card, loads of memory and a professional server operating system. Now the architecture spreads AI activity onto one (or more?) different cores. What I am hoping is that as AI processing saturates with too many objects doing too much stuff they will slow down without sending all the human pilots warping around the sky or the mission crashing to desktop.

 

That's the theory anyway and what we have to test.

Nice flying gents.Finally managed to find some arty and trucks behind german lines.I claim 3 trucks and 2 arty with my poor Strutter

Unfortunately I did not manage to spot those 100 tanks.No lags or stuttering of any kind at my end of line.

OK we had a late start because I set up 99 planes of each type. This made ROF very unhappy so there is an max limit hidden there. After finding the problem and changing plane quantities to -1 (unlimited) the mission launched.

 

Now we had probably 250+ vehicles out there with more than 100 moving.

 

We found and engaged artillery which was more visible due to nearby trucks, we saw strings of tanks moving across no-mans land so they were definately there.

 

For me at least it was smooth no warping no freezes.

 

However from the stats analysis there was no tank v artillery battle. 

 

This may be normal because it takes around 90 minutes for tanks moving at 4 Mph to cross no-mans land or thyere may have been saturation and slow-down.

 

Next week we wil rerun starting tanks at half way across no-mans land.

+1 for the A/c in the free demo, that way people who more interested in BOS can take part without outlay, I truly enjoy flying n ROF but the era does not compel me to purchase new A/C

I was setting up a similar mission for SP and when i was testing it (without AI planes), even 60-70 stationary units caused a lot of stuttering.

 

Did those 250 units get triggered or did they spawn at the right at beginning of the mission without any check zone triggers?

As I wrote in the beginning, all moving units are phased in during the 30 minutes line up time using random on timers and all vehicle statics are woken up and put to sleep via complex triggers.

Including attack areas kicked the artillery into action,

 

starting off with around 100 tanks and similar quantity of artillery and trucks, trains etc;

 

Roughly half moving half static;

 

There was a serious ground battle, look at the ammount of casualties.

 

In the air I can confirm it ran smoothly for me.
