jollyjack Posted October 15, 2020 Posted October 15, 2020 (edited) Ugliest WW1 & WW2 Planes Contest; as opener: Edited October 15, 2020 by jollyjack
AndyJWest Posted October 15, 2020 Posted October 15, 2020 I'd say that calling that a WW1 plane was questionable but whatever. For sheer ugliness, nothing can beat the efforts of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. There is an excruciating example already been posted somewhere on this forum, which resembles a collision between a cowshed, a windmill, and a disassembled giraffe skeleton, though perhaps fortunately I can't remember its name. Selective amnesia is a mental defence mechanism... 1
blue_max Posted October 15, 2020 Posted October 15, 2020 Wow, what is that thing. Amazingly it seems to have achieved some moderate amounts of lift off!

It's an aeroplane (or something vaguely resembling one) built by Glenn Curtiss from an 1883 design, for use as evidence in his patent battle with the Wright Brothers. The original never flew, but it had features which Curtiss claimed were 'prior art' invalidating the Wright's patents. Getting the lawyers involved was probably one of the reasons that the U.S. soon lagged behind other countries in aircraft development... 1
Gambit21 Posted October 30, 2020 Posted October 30, 2020 This is traditionally the thread where someone will say “P-51” just to be an ass.

Actually the underbelly radiator does look like a beer-belly to me. Surely she is not the ugliest, but not one of the the prettiest either like Spit IX could be. But I'd go with Tyberan's suggerstion regarding Blackburn's.
Feathered_IV Posted October 30, 2020 Posted October 30, 2020 If any one of you suggests the Amiot 143 you are dead to me forever. 1 1
Uufflakke Posted October 30, 2020 Posted October 30, 2020 As someone said before in another topic: Anything French except the D.520
Monksilver Posted October 30, 2020 Posted October 30, 2020 Vickers Valentia is in with a shout for the WW2 category - so ugly they only used it at night in Africa in 1940. 1
DD_Crash Posted October 30, 2020 Posted October 30, 2020 Why would anyone think that that it was a good idea to go for a blind designer

Feathered_IV Posted October 30, 2020 Posted October 30, 2020 Don't adjust your screens. It's the General Aircraft Fleet Shadower 1 1

How could someone not find that tadpole gorgeous?! The 143 has a marvelous cockpit layout too (pilot and copilot arranged vertically). Now as for a B-17... I could never really understand what other people saw in those...
Chief_Mouser Posted October 31, 2020 Posted October 31, 2020 The French didn't have a total monopoly on horrible-looking aircraft but they sure tried hard. How about this shocker? France's 'Battleship of the Air'. It actually flew! 1

If you knew me better you would have been sure it had to be me, challanges are to me like bacon is for rat`s ? I simply go on autopilot, not known for thinking before talking, ok I am not known for thinking, period. All tho it is not the most beautiful plane, I will say it always facinated me. If I was zapped back in time and became a pilot. I always wanted to fly it, and the Grumman Duck. But I have a sick taste in planes Edited November 2, 2020 by 216th_LuseKofte
Feathered_IV Posted November 2, 2020 Posted November 2, 2020 Yes well, I’m fiddling with your voodoo doll now. Let me know if you smell your hairs burning. ? 1
Boomerang Posted November 2, 2020 Posted November 2, 2020 The Sud-Est SE 100 was one I found hard to admire and this one below, not sure what make it is?

Like training air gunners and so on. This picture has been shared all over internet. I seen it parked too. So I believe it is not photoshopped. Lysander+modified Lancaster tail 1

It is Westland P.12 Wendover, a prototype for a ground attack role. First flown in 1941 but the RAF had the good sense not to order any and the programme was scrapped in 1944 - bit worrying it took 3 years to make that decision though.
Tyberan Posted November 3, 2020 Posted November 3, 2020 Blackburn Blackburn, like a band's crappy self titled album. 2
40plus Posted November 3, 2020 Posted November 3, 2020 There are certainly several fringe designs that are crazy ugly but if you limit to planes of note, ones that played a significant role, the Hurricane gets my vote for king fugly. Aesthetically it has no game. It looks like the combination of an airplane, a motorhome and a greenhouse.

Rothary Posted November 5, 2020 Posted November 5, 2020 Speaking of which, experimental Hillson FH.40 3
