Chief_Mouser Posted October 26, 2020 Posted October 26, 2020 Thanks for these. I always like looking at aerial shots of airfields - fascinating. ? These aren't all relevant to the Normandy map though... a lot of these pics pre-date 1944 by some time. Bekesbourne, Hawkinge and Manston for example.
Mistralfred901 Posted October 26, 2020 Author Posted October 26, 2020 On google earth there are photographs of these airfields dating from 1944.

Do not trust the dates on Google Earth. Their 1940 overlay of Kent is clearly post-war, probably 1946 or 47. The collection you have put together is from the whole WW2 period, not 44-45. Take Manston, for example. One is clearly labelled as a Luftwaffe photo from 1939 and the other shows no trace of the huge 2700 x 250m (approx.) emergency runway (still there today) that was first used on 5th April 44. 1

Absolutely right. I've found the best place to start with reliably dating these photos is NCAP, along with the (very!) extensive set of photos taken of France during and immediately after the war. Google Earth is just too unreliable for this sort of thing. EDIT: but yes, thank you for posting these photos! I have passed along the ones I found useful to the team working on developing the Normandy map. Edited October 26, 2020 by LukeFF
Mistralfred901 Posted October 27, 2020 Author Posted October 27, 2020 I have no photographs of manston in 1944. I did my best. I used the fabulous book by Ken Delve called "The military airfields of Britain: Southern England"
