cardboard_killer Posted October 11, 2020 Posted October 11, 2020 [80 years ago today] "• The first production Handley Page Halifax enters service with the RAF. With modifications and training required, the type will not enter combat until March, 1941. More than six thousand will be built, but it will be overshadowed by the better known Lancaster (which has not yet had its maiden flight). " 1 1
messsucher Posted October 11, 2020 Posted October 11, 2020 Made plastic model of that when was a kid, was helluva awesome.
cardboard_killer Posted October 11, 2020 Author Posted October 11, 2020 It was, as I recall, the first toy plane I was ever given when a child. I think I was 7 or so.
354thFG_Leifr Posted October 11, 2020 Posted October 11, 2020 Halifax, an interesting aircraft. My Grandfather saw one crash as a child just on the outskirts of his village in Nottinghamshire, it was returning home early-morning after a raid and failed to make the return to Lincolnshire. All of the aircrew onboard perished in the crash; he attended to the memorial in the village to the crew every year until physical impediment.
MiloMorai Posted October 11, 2020 Posted October 11, 2020 My name sake disappeared with all the crew of a Halifax III on a mission to Essen in Oct 1944. It was a miserable night and was probably lost over the North sea due to Icing. It was carrying 10,000lbs of bombs (6 x 500 lb MC bomb, 1 x 2000 lb HC bomb, 5 x 1000 lb SAP bomb).
