Deltahawkoz Posted October 9, 2020 Posted October 9, 2020 Hi all, as I delve further into this great sim...just wondering about the utility of the Gyro compass in the p40 series...given that to my knowledge, these don't have a course setter? Have watch a YT on using the gyro in the Brit a/c..setting up an interception against an enemy fighter..any pointers on how to use the Gyro compass in general with the P40s, navigation, interception, etc??
BlitzPig_EL Posted October 9, 2020 Posted October 9, 2020 P40 is simple. Point nose at enemy, pull trigger, rinse and repeat. ? 1

Unlike CloD, here we don't have interactive gyros. Only compasses, and iirc, in airplanes that had both instruments they will just be constantly synchronized. There are more expert people here to explain this, but as I understand it, gyros only make sense to help you deal with the effects of magnetic deviation, but as discussed before in this forum, there is no such thing in this game and all maps point to a coinciding magnetic and geographic north.

Gyros are used to overcome compass turning error and high latitude inaccuracy to my believe? These are not modeled so I don't understand what you want to do with your gyro?

AndyJWest Posted October 13, 2020 Posted October 13, 2020 Sensible people live where it's close enough to zero not to matter. According to current data Heathrow has a declination of 0°E, whereas Farnborough, 20 miles southwest, has a declination of 0°W. Presumably there's an actual difference hidden in a rounding error or something. Makes flying around my home territory in MSFS a lot simpler, anyway. ? 1
1CGS LukeFF Posted October 13, 2020 1CGS Posted October 13, 2020 On the subject of magnetic fields, the region around Kursk is known as the Kursk Magnetic Anomaly because of its huge deposits of iron ores. I can only imagine what sort of havoc that plays on navigation with a magnetic compass. 1
