"[80 years ago today,] the Fairey Albacore makes its combat debut when No 829 Squadron planes conduct a night attack on Brest, France with bombs, along with Swordfish of No 812 Squadron. During this raid, German destroyers Friedrich Eckholdt, Hans Lody, and Theodor Riedel are damaged. One Albacore is shot down with its three crew captured. Designed as a replacement for the Swordfish, the Albacore will be unpopular due to being less maneuverable and having an unreliable engine. It will be retired before the older aircraft."
