110 Gunner Sleeping on the Job

I like flying the 110 cause I'm bad and all. I really like having a rear gunner to keep pesky allies from sneaking up on me while I'm thumbing through a book or eating a sandwich or something.

However, it seems that the rear gunner is reeeeeallly slow to fire on an identified target, even when I've set engagement distance to far.

Is this common? I remember rear gunners being super accurate and aggressive back in the day.

If it's online, sometimes, something, happens somewhere in the netcode that can cause this.  I've had more than one instance where the Pe-2 gunner would call out an attacker but, not even bother to shoulder the gun or would mount-up on the gun but not shoot at 109s dead on my 6 at 400 meters.  I'd be getting blasted to pieces at close range while the gunner would be sitting at the navigation station doing slide rule calculations.

The only other possible and more likely explanation is that the attacker you think the gunner should be shooting at is actually too off-angle for him to get a good lead on.  I've not really noticed AI gunners fire short bursts when the enemy is close but, not really going to-hit, like a real gunner might to ward off an attacker.  It seems every shot it takes has to have a rather high probability chance of hitting or it won't shoot at all.

I've tried the gunner position in a 110 myself and found it quite difficult to hit anything, especially the Ratas doing barrel rolls.

When I'm the pilot I set my gunner to 'fight back only' and 'medium distance', so he doesn't waste too much of his 750 shots and every 10th mission approx. he got one down.

The rule of thumb is that if it's your gunner they can't hit anything and if its the gunner of an aircraft you're attacking they hit every shot perfectly ;)

I haven't had much trouble with the 110's gunners working but they do have a restricted field of fire and so they may not react until the target is within their field of view. They usually call out bandits before they get things ready to go.

The Bf110E-2 has a different gunner station than the G-2 and there are differences there.

It would be most useful if there was a command for AI gunners to stay alert at their posts with the gun ready to shoot, rather than having to repeatedly put it away and take it out again when an enemy skirts the engagement range. This is a problem especially on the A-20 where it can take a (seemingly) long time to unfold and set up the ventral position.

I did put this into the Developer Suggestions gathering thread a few months back asking for a "man, and stay at your gun" command.

I have no faith in the gunner at all. He was trained to shoot by Imperial Storm Troopers. He is however the best radar in the sim, but that is about all he is good for. Otherwise he is dumber than a bag of hammers.

One thing that has perplexed me lately is, when I get "insta-pilot killed", he sits back there like "no F's given" and then leisurely jumps from the flaming wreck with zero degree of urgency.  How can I get insta-killed and he is back there like Chuck Norris?

They were radars in original IL-2 too ?
