Sokol1 Posted June 22, 2013 Posted June 22, 2013 (edited) Interesting, the Over Fields of Fire: Flying the Sturmovik in Action on the Eastern Front 1942-45 and Red Sky Black Death: A Soviet Woman Pilot's Memoir of the Eastern Front it's about the same pilot. Extracted - from the first, a "fisherman story": "Our Goldy (that was what we called Rykhlin among ourselves, after his fiery-red hair) got a little carried away, forgot about his altitude in the head of battle, and one of the Hittlerite tanks instantly pulled up the barrel of his cannon and opened fire at the plane! Rykhin's damaged machine, barely pulling out of the attack, turned away towards Galendzhik. But four Messerschmitts pounced upon it like a bolt from blue. The pilot had no choice but to accept the fight with them. Knowing the power of the forward fire of our Sturmoviks, the German fighters feared to attack from the front. In the current situation the high speed of the Messerschimitt was a nuisance for them and Rykhlin decided to capitalize on it. When two vultures, having put down their undercarriages to reduce the speed, sneaked up to the Sturmovik and began to shoot at it point-blank, Rykhlin abruptly turned his plane around towards the enemy and went on the attack himself. One of the Messerschimitts found itself in the Il's gunsight with his yellow belly exposed. The pilot pressed all the triggers and the yellow-belly began to smoke, tilted on one wing and fell into the sea. The second Hitlerite met the same end. The aerial gunner Vanya Efremenko, already wounded in the arm, shoot up the third one; a fourth Messer exhaled smoke as well. Quitting the dogfight it turned towards his aerodrome. On his own, badly damaged, our Sturmovik had faced four Facist fighters and got the upper hand! And this miraculous victory was made by a pilot flying only second combat sortie. ...Rykhlin and I.S.Efremenko were awarded the ranks of Heroes of the Soviet Union". (http://www.amazon.com/Tigers-Mud-Commander-Stackpole-Military/dp/0811729117) To quote from the book, “Kramer , upset by the unrelenting nuisance of these guys, elevated his cannon along the approach route. I talked him in. He took a chance and pulled the trigger. On the second attempt, he hit one of the ‘bees’ on its wing. The Russian crashed behind us.” Would really be interesting to find out! 216th_Lucas_From_Hell Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 Not the case. Rykhlin made it back while Carius' target crashed. There was a long discussion a while back about tanks shooting at aircraft, it was somewhat of a common nuisance om both sides.
NN_Elanion Posted May 12, 2016 Posted May 12, 2016 This is not a film but it may interest you .Subtitles in english.
