Hi All,

Currently running the below rig

R9 3900X

Crosshair VIII (PCIe4)

Vega VII

32GB 3600C16

2TB RAID0 NVMe (5GBs/R, 3.5GBs/W)

CPU and GPU water-cooled (I think I've seen the Vega hit 85C in the hot-spot once, Ryzen does not go above 75C, turbo goes above 4.6 with latest bios on a coupe of Cores)

Come Oct / Nov I'm getting the 6900XT which for arguments sake we will say comes in at 3080 levels or 2080TI +20%. I don't want to kick off anything on Intel v AMD or Nvidia v AMD so let's go for that sort of performance.

I have the Rift (pre S) model and it works OK, I love the immersion so want a bit more. What's the current go to VR setup?

Thanks in advance

S!

I'd suggest the HP Reverb G2. You'll find it's an insane resolution upgrade over the original Rift, and a 2080ti (already) does a good job with a Reverb, so a 3080/6900XT should be in a good spot for performance. With the G2 you also get Valve's excellent off-ear audio.

Other headsets you might consider include the Valve Index, which has a bit more field of view than the G2, but it's heavier, more expensive, and requires external tracking hardware. Some people like the outside-in tracking of the Index because it's very accurate and good for full-room VR, but some people don't because they just wanna run seated simulators and the extra faffing is a turn-off.

If you are willing to sell a kidney and struggle through the pain that long wait times, dodgy customer service and variable build quality, and if you have a larger than average IPD, 65mm or above, then consider the Pimax 8KX. But it's very expensive and very much an enthusiast's headset - you need to be willing to tinker to get the most out of it. I tried an Artisan and my 62.8mm IPD didn't work with it very well.

Rift S is a bit of a dead-end and a waste of your hardware, compared to a G2. But it's not a bad headset.

G2 is the way to go.  The Reverb G1 is pretty good with some annoying flaws.  We are looking for the G2 to be large improvement.  You will like the high resolution if you spend a lot of time playing this game.  The Valve Index and the Oculus are solid options if you are a casual IL2 player.

Thanks guys. I only use VR for IL2-BOS and Elite Dangerous. The G2 is still on preorder, has anyone tried it in beta with IL2?

Are you sure G2 is better than Valve Index?

Does VR player have a disadvantage when compared to TrackIR5 player?

G2 has higher resolution making it a better option for this type of thing in my opinion.  The Index is probably the best all around if you are playing all kinds of stuff.  VR guys do give up a bit of visibility to monitor players but the high resolution helps a lot.  I can get near the top 150 or so on the leader board if I'm not screwing around.  VR is VERY fun though, you feel like you are in the plane.

I would agree G2 being the way to go. Might have to buy it, it seems VR begin to be mature enough.
