RIP Rift.
Loved my CV1 and also my Rift S. Still using my Rift S daily for many hours a week.
They both have done a great job for me and for the longest I was very loyal to Oculus products whilst many of my fellow flight simmers were moving on to others.  I also have a Quest but do not use it all that much any more.

Quest 2 with Link and a required FB account - no thanks, especially not for how I use VR.
Awaiting my Reverb G2 I have on pre-order.

But the Rift opened me up to a whole new gaming world I could only have previously imagined.
I game much more now that I have VR. Spend more money too ugh.

Oculus listen:

Take the Quest2, remove the battery and the XR2 chip and put a proper DP cable. With the savings reduce the price to 200$.

Oculus is totally blind to reject the PC-VR business.

How single person can influence so much in a company and destroy the original concept. It is like a dictator, everyone inside Oculus has to be aligned, otherwise they are out.

Rift and rift s got me into VR, still usIng the S. Seemed expensive at the time but it’s definitely been one of my more value for money purchases. The move to the G2 or similar will be a while away as it’s just a bit too expensive to justify, especially as I might need to upgrade to get the best out of it.

Rift CV1 got me into VR.

Honorable memories to it. The following headsets like Rift S were already not up to the competition, picture quality wise.

With the Quest 2 not being sold in Germany, and it receiving a destructive review in Ars Technica, I am really wondering if it can compete to PC VR devices. Its single screen means a lot of that horizontal resolution gets lost due to the long IPD range. Allegedly it's more on the level of a Rift S than anywhere near the Reverb G2. The closest IPD setting is 1.5mm from mine.

However, if they support "Air Link", as Carmack mentioned, there won't be much that could hold me back from purchasing it, even if that means importing it from France or Denmark.

Yeah Oculus are blazing a new trail going after and creating new markets in the social arena.

And if they further improve Link connectivity it will be as good as PC-VR at a reasonable price.

And native wireless eventually would be incredible.

FB requirement though I do not like.

Hello Fenris,  if you watch the review from Adam Savages tested they are of the belief (without taking it apart) that the screen is larger the the listed resolution. This allows the quest 2 to maintain the listed resolution through all the IPD settings by moving the image left or right to unused portions and keeping it centered with the lenses. This accounts for the very odd resolution number on the horizontal.

That would be quite nice indeed! ?

I just got a message last night in the Oculus Store talking about the Oculus / Facebook account thing. It said I did not have to merge my accounts until sometime in 2023 when they will officially end and require you to merge your account unless you want certain social aspects...which I do not. Then you have to do it sooner. So maybe we have a little more time than led to originally believe.

I like my Rift S, quality VR for a solid price so hopefully can get a couple more years out of it before upgrading to the 2nd or 3rd gen by then in a few years.

Yeah technically  you have until 2023 to merge the account with a Facebook account, long as you don't buy another Oculus headset.

I got a message this morning after I launched Oculus Home requesting me to tie my Oculus account into a Facebook account.

I did have the option to skip that, which I did, then it gave a warning some features may be disabled.

I assume they are talking social features which I have no desire for.

And I dang sure am not going to merge my Oculus account with a Facebook account.

I don't do VR for social, I do it for games and experiences. Heck I don't even partake in multiplayer gaming.

I just don't care for this strong arming by Facebook.

I do give them credit though, they are making moves to try and really grow the VR market which is good for all of us.

Yeah I agree this is dumb, and will probably turn me away from Oculus with my next VR purchase a few years down the road and go with someone from Valve.

I don't know if this was intentional or just something strange on my end.

But this morning I got somehow logged out of the Oculus forums, and when I try to sign back in with my Oculus account it will not let me. It just hangs there.

I am thinking this is one of the "features" they were talking about that might be limited without linking a Face Book account.

This however has happened in the past for some odd reason, so may just be that again who knows.

Definetely you are not aligned with the FaceBook winds... so you are exiled to the darkness ... they don´t want fugitives in the forums anymore...

Just joking. Probably it is a temporary login problem.

What I really don´t understand is why they are putting a date (2023) for that. Allowing people to separate games/experiences from personal/social items.

If they want a date the current users (not me anymore) would prefer 2099 (or higher for educated teenagers!)

I am starting to see some decent reports of Quest 2 being used wireless with Virtual Desktop for some PC- gaming.

Might be sign of the future.

It's $300, looks amazing, and works wirelessly. They can have my Facebook data for the value they're offering.

Not my case.

IMHO they are not offering "value" for Flight Sims (or cars or space sims) since there other better suited devices in terms of resolution or FOV or both.

My personal experience with Oculus started at the very first Kickstarter being a DK1 backer, with all the inital passion of the Oculus team to create the best PC VR headset (who remember the Abrash prediction!).

For the DK1 was an awesome experience, I almost tested everything. Then arrived the DK2 which was better in many ways and finally the Rift CV1 which was a state-of-the-art VR device at that time. See my post. Everything was looking good despite of the Facebook acquisition.

With the Rift-S I was really dissapointed, and it was the first sign of the Evil Empire. See here and here. Oculus could have release the Half-Dome prototype with good FOV and resolution.

And here joking about what exactly the MArk has finally done. I just quickly sold my Quest after knowing that we had to go Facebook.

In a certain way, I relatively happy with Oculus not creating leading edge devices for PC any-more. So I will never be tempted to be forced to be in Facebook to get one Oculus device.

Hey Willinilli, I was there with you with the Oculus DK1. Fantastic to actually try VR in a flight sim back 7 years ago (Well, "flight sim", it was Warthunder...). Even made a vid:

When I heard Oculus was being bought up by FB I abandoned any idea of staying with their products. Kids came along and I still haven't bought a newer VR set! - Oh well, I guess I will have time to get back inyto the hobby ten years from now...  :-)

yes, I also have kids (9yr and 13yr) and dog and it is difficult to afford time to play my only game IL-2 VR. Normally I can only fly 2 sessions of 2-3 hour per month. My kids only touch the VR sporadically. If your last device was the DK1 or DK2 you will see a big difference when you will try the Reverb G2

Sorry for getting your name wrong ?

For this game Rift S is good enough for me. I wont be upgrading anything since both FS 2020 run good and DCS the same.

I do not like the prices of new GPU, neither the fact that my i7 then might be too slow to follow the GPU performance.

And should I upgrade, I wont do it on cost of reduced settings, nor half way.

So I will keep what I have and await sunglas size VR and upgrade according to it. I simply hate strapping that humid box to my face
