Cover in formation

Was trying to get a formation of planes doing a "cover" command on some bombers to fly in formation instead of the "weave". No success yet: but did see this from 2016:

Which is just what I'm getting at -- Is there a way to force a covering flight to stay in a slow formation?

No - cover command is somewhat less than realistic - it turns the covering formation into a swarm of flies.

 

Fine for some applications, but not for say Mustangs, P-38’s or Jugs covering bombers.

That 'flies' behavior is just what i found out.

A p38 with a cover plane that goes all over the place, but it followed the P38 somehow in wwide circles and occasionally attacked something.

 

Maybe what we need is some manure setting for the cover command for them flies. 

I am trying to get it to work, but i guess the cover planes need to be waypointed with the bombers?
