How does IL2 compare to other plane games/sims?

I play a lot of war warthunder , but certain things in the game bother me like inconsistent damage to planes. I also got DCS to try that out but that's too hardcore for me right now and way too much of a learning curve. So how does Il2 compare to these and other flight sims?

It is pretty much between WT and DCS. Realistic damage and flight model, but not as many buttons as in DCS.

All the realism is focused on the aerial part of WW2, as in, start engine and get flying...not DCS style figure out how fuel pump works, prime engine, etc. (which I love, btw).

Once you're flying in BoS everything is geared towards realism in tactics and practices, there is a good chunk of engine management but it's basically overheating and mixture management, not as intimidating as DCS P51.

Sounds like BoS will be right up your ally. :)

You can get a feel for the "reality" and complexity of BOS by trying Rise of Flight, which has a similar core engine and has a free download including 2 aircraft.

About thirty aircraft. Two of which are flyable. ;)

Well, all things Conchitaed, BoS certainly isn't the Wurst...

War Thunder is a casual arcadey game, good for people who just want some quick, good dogfight action. Or tank and naval action, seeing as the devs are making it into a full-scale war game. DCS is for people who love just getting the plane off the ground. BoS is between the two. Edited by [AJSA]_Cybermat47

For the moment BOS is a unfinished simulation with a prospect of a great future, like ROF I hope in the next stage of development more planes shall be developed and could be purchased separately maybe also new maps.

The game is in it way to become a reference for WW2 air combat simulation! :salute:

In my opinion BoS is head & shoulders above the original IL2. But no suprise there. And apart from WiP issues, such as dodgy 109 FMs and various other bits and pieces, I consider it better than CloD, even in the knowledge that CloD is significantly more complex/sophisticated 'under the hood'. (mainly in the DM dept).

Thanks for all the replies guys! I'll prolly be picking up BoS soon, in the meantime I might get cliffs of dover

Hey Siggi I had seen you're squadron and was wondering do you have any age requirements not listed on your site? Also do you guys play BoS often as well as CoD?

We have no age requirements but we do require mature behaviour (that and young age are not mutually exclusive fortunately). "Mature" is a subjective notion though.

We're not flying BoS 'live' yet, for all the obvious reasons (unfinished features, no proper servers etc). But once it's released, assuming all is well, we'll be transfering permanently from CloD to BoS.

If you like flight sims and you want a different flavor from what you are used to I suggest you pick of CoD, BoS, and the original IL2 1946 as well.. 46 is dated.. but it is still a great piece of kit and the only thing WT has on it is graphics. Otherwise IL2 1946 blows WT right out of the water in every way. Stock right out of the box. Patched fully and modded to HSFX 7.2 it is competitive with anything on the market. It's worst feature is it's dated graphics..

War Thunder-game with planes

DCS-consider some modules that has (PFM)=PROFFESIONAL FLIGHT MODELS very realistic on the ground and in the air as well

IL2 BOS-in my opinion even in its current 50% of development its a higly realistic simulation.the planes is basen on real documents and respond awesome on the ground while you taxing

7.2 or 7.0.2?

You know Bearcat meant 7.0.2, unless you know that 242 sqd have updated it again.

I play it seldom, my version is 7.0.2 so I was curious if there's a newer version...

That's all.

As far as I am concerned, BoS has to show more than a platform for fighters furballs.

That means (for me at least), that a signifikant improvement in bomb sights and map possibilities has still to come.

Lets see, how the 111 will come along. The reference here seems to be CoD probably.

If bomber pilots are only a group, to be seen as unimportant for the sim, then I will stay over the channel.

Overall, Bearcat is right. 1946 is dated. It's awesome but it's run is slowly going out. I've had issues getting it to work in Win 7, and when I do, its not up to par on the immersion that CLOD gives and it has random crashes / I have to use certain older drivers. Now in XP it works fine, but its a waste of a dual core PC to throw in win XP just for 1946. It was designed in a 32 bit environment and now things are moving to 64 bit architecture and it's showing.

Then we have CLOD, its good but it keeps crashing. Supposedly they fixed it, but it has the occasional crash, and still its a resource hog. The Alpha of this game proved to be more reliable than my entire experience of CLOD (both entirety of experience). Graphics and feel CLOD is great, but for immersion and details, this game and DCS win out.

DCS is very immersive for me, but only in 1 plane, the mustang. Still I loved the fantasy merc pilots, a p-51 merc in a new age of helos and A-10's  . . .  but not for a full on ww 2. Now it has a dora, but that game is year(s) away from even an alpha. Also many would find the lack of communication disturbing (and lack of timelines / goals / concrete development). I'll probably get it once it's done.

Then the arcade series (world of war planes and war thunder), war planes is following the MMO format of free to play . . . these games are ok but flout the immersiveness. Ok so Germany can get a MiG-15 in height of ww2? Ahh . . . And since they are flouting realism, one can question, is that how X plane really flew like? Did these guys do research and spent months looking at engineering docs, pilot's journals, opposing force's documents . . . etc?

So far out everything BOS has the most balanced approach, and their philosophy is closest to what made original IL-2 great. Although DCS seems to have more of Oleg, its headed by the CLOD main guy, and so there's the detachment to the community. DCS world war 2 is kept going by that, and its greatness, but the community doesn't play a deep role in development as we do here. You can tell the approach of DCS and BOS. DCS went in with late war and jets. BOS went in the same direction that the original IL-2 went.

This is a the right place for a sim to carry on the banner of Il-2 and could be a start of another great era of ww 2 flight sims. For the first time in a long time, we have one definite winner (BOS) and potential one.

WW2 development is open, time for more
I didn't even know they made 'em anymore
who knew they made thousands different planes
for years gamers roamed these empty halls
why have a sim when $green$ duty calls
Finally they're opening up the gate

Servers'll have actual real live people
Updated graphics totally strange
But why, am I so ready for this change?

'Cause for the first time in forever
There'll be CEM, there'll FM done right
For the first time in forever
I'll be playing through the night

Dcs´s A10 C and the p51. I love them. And yes of course i love il2 BoS :)

FWIW I fly both IL2 1946 and CloD on Windows 7 with standard drivers and no crashes.

I guess it depends on your system overall.

It's great to play these older games on newer hardware because you can Max the graphics settings and, via the driver, force loads of extra anti-aliasing etc.

You can also greatly increase the number of planes in the air.

Still, BoS is shaping up to be a great sim and hopefully a platform with a good long term future.

Me too.. W7 U .. without any bumps whatsoever.. and I use a MSFFB 2 stick.. one that isnt even supported by MS anymore.. everything works just fine.

Agreed! Those guys are awesome!

Il2 bos lacks some of simulations that dcs offers but I think majority of people still want easier approach than fullblown studysim, each on their own, I like them all! (But I must admit that A10C is still by far my favourite sim of all time)

Not here, it's mainly on the eastern part of the country.

Personally I've taken il-2 1946 off my computer because it looks so dated now compared to CLOD, ROF and BOS; almost toy like, especially the cockpits and scenery, and that makes up most of the screen don't it! It's almost like cfs2 looked once il-2 forgotten battles first came out, things move on.

If you enjoy ROF or CLOD then you'll love this. If you liked il-2 1946 then this is a massive upgrade and you won't want to go back to it.
