I have a mid range sized desktop with I7-7700K CPU, 1080Ti and 32 gigs ram.

Prices on the 2080Ti are dropping quickly with the onset of the Nvidia 3000 series.

Would like to upgrade to the 2080Ti but having never built my own PC, I have questions that

I hope some of the technical experts can answer.

1.   Will the same cable connectors work for a 2080Ti?

2.    Will I have to make any software adjustments to use the 2080Ti.

3.    How significant will the improvement in visuals and FPS be with the upgrade?

1. Yes

2. Just the same drivers as the 1080Ti

3. From what I'm reading you'll probably be better off with the new 3080, or wait to see what AMD are offering

unless you can get the 2080Ti for under £650.

How significant the upgrade will appear depends on what settings your using in the game and your monitor/HMD; If you CPU is already clocked to 5Ghz or over

I'm not sure you'll see a huge improvement, but you'll be able to run all the eye candy at full.

Hope that helps

1: Yes.

2: No. I usually though to be safe when replacing a vid card, is uninstall the current drivers in safe mode with Display Driver Uninstaller,  also have ethernet

connection unplugged. I then install the card, boot up with internet still unplugged, and clean install the latest drivers ( downloaded previously obviously).

I then reboot and plug the internet back in.

3: Marginal.

Based on the lower prices of 30x cards, might be smarter to hold off and grab one of them. Then you should see significant gain over your 1080 Ti.

I upgraded to 2080Ti from 1080Ti and there was a noticeable improvement in graphics smoothness. I play at 4k with all settings maxed out. My CPU was i3-8350k at 4.6Ghz, and I had 32 GB RAM at 3200Mhz. So depending on the price, and how soon you want that graphics boost it may be worth it.

Thanks everyone for the info and I think I will wait and do the 3080 upgrade and then sell my 1080 ti on ebay and the savings generated by only upgrading the GPU to a 3080 will justify upgrading my Pimax 5K+ to a Reverb G-2.

Don thanks for your detailed instructions they are always needed and appreciated.

:good:

You are most welcome anytime!

Btw don't know if I ever shared this with ya, first home I ever purchased ( a long, long time ago) was a newly built small home

in Lawrenceville, GA. At that time there was hardly anything out there.

I would definitely wait. Good idea.  My two cents

1: Yes

2: No

3: Very significant but wait a moment, don't hurry buying one. First check the various benchmarks when they come out in October between 2080Ti and 3070. The 3070 should be at par or slightly better but we need benchmarks that we do not have yet.

A 2080Ti would be worth buying if the price gets around 350$ from my point of view. But I am skeptical and in general I do not advise buying used GPU cards as you have no idea what they went through.

Otherwise get a 3070 and you will have a board that will have a much longer technological "life span" for future games, and also if you later on, upgrade your cpu and motherboard with PCIe 4.0.

There will be also by end October the AMD announcement on their new GPU. It may be of the level of a 3070 and if so in general AMD is less expensive than Nvidia.

In conclusion it is worth to wait and see until the end of November, then you can choose your Christmas gift ?

P.S.

If money is not a problem and you do not care on price/performance ratios and want the best performance then buy the 3090, that was at the price of the former 2080Ti. Nothing will surpass it whatever comes from AMD, and so this is the easiest no brainer buy, as long as your PSU can handle it. You should have at least an 850 watts or better 1000 watts power supply.

But even for those who will buy a 3090 I would advise to wait for the benchmarks, as at the moment we have only Nvidia performance information and technical specs and we do not know how it relates to game performance for games that are not RTX and DLSS 2.0 designed for, typically IL2.

The best thing to do is wait for the 3080.

The RTX 3090 starts at $1499 while the 2080Ti was ~$1200. Also the non-founders editions might be even more expensive, so definitely not the same price.

In theory yes. But there have been 2080Ti versions from non-founder editions up to 1'700 US$ in my country at least. Let's say that the border here is a little blurred.

Took the plunge with a 144kHz Gsync 4k monitor on mt 2080ti .......wow, now that's an improvement ...

Unfortunately there isn't a monitor on the market which fits my requirements.

I don't want an ultrawide (because their vertical resolution sucks versus 4k), but a regular aspect-ratio 4k 36-38inches wide with gsync. No such monitor exists.

For reference I currently have a non-gsync 4k 32inch, which seems too small to me despite sitting really close to it.

But back to the main point: I think an ultrawide gsync monitor can be a good choice for an 1080ti user because its resolution is less than 4k and therefore most graphics slowdowns (caused by the relatively under-powered 1080ti) can be smoothed out by the gsync. Therefore such a smart monitor choice may actually be preferrable versus going for 2080ti or 3080.
