Battle of Normandy questions...

I would like to take IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Normandy in early access, I have three questions:

1 - Can you use it immediately?

2 - Does it support VR?

3 - Are there ground vehicles?

Hey Jude... sorry couldn't resist.

1. Not alone as yet. You'll need at least one other theater as the Normandy map isn't yet released.

2. It does or will depending on what you purchase prior to its full release.

3. As above.

1. Normandy is a pre-order... it won't have a map until sometime next year (at the earliest).

2. It does support VR (extemely well I'm told - although I've never tried it myself).

3. There may be additional AI ground vehicles (but it hasn't been announced). Player controllable vehicles are limited to some from the Russian Front... and most of them are dependent on purchasing Tank Crew. Whether we'll have a Tank Crew II with more vehicles is apparently dependent on sales of the original.

These answers aren't completely correct. The situation is a bit more complicated. Assuming you have not purchased any other modules, I'll say the following:

1. You can use Battle of Normandy immediately, but only the P-47D-22 is available because the module is in development. Until the Normandy map is complete, you will be limited to a handful of smaller maps unless you play multiplayer. Your single player options will be quite limited for a while with no campaign or career.

2. Yes.

3. No playable ground vehicles are planned for Normandy. However, AI vehicles from the other modules are available.

Others have given you some of the answers so I will jump in with a recommendation. Battle of Normandy is early in development. This means, as others have indicated, that limited content is currently available for it at the moment. Right now its just the P-47D-22 Thunderbolt and nothing else. As new pieces of content are completed, they will be released to us.

Going by your user account, you probably don't have any of the other titles in the series installed so I would therefore make the recommendation that you buy IL-2: Battle of Bodenplatte first and then get Battle of Normandy second (or later). Bodenplatte is a complete product with ten (in premium) aircraft, map, vehicles, career mode, etc. Then later do the Normandy pre-order and get the latest content for that later.

The two titles together are well connected with aircraft sets that compliment and connect extremely well and that makes both valuable to each other.

And buy from the website, not Steam! Devs get more hard earned, well deserved money that way! (Plus, I gather it's less of a hassle with certain things.)

I wouldn't necessarily recommend Bodenplatte per se. Not that it isn't good, but there's other titles as well (BOS, BOM, BOK), each with their own advantages and disadvantages. Just buy the one that sounds most attractive to you. Also, if you want to use Steam, you'll have to buy BOS. You can merge it with content bought at the IL2 store, as long as BOS was bought from Steam.

Yes, but Bodenplatte gives you, together with Normandy, two games, which are connected together as western front battles with aircrafts of the same countries, while, if you take one of the east front battles and want to fly for the Allied side, you can't have a connected career. Plus you can use the coming Normandy aircrafts already in the Bodenplatte career, while waiting for the Normandy career and map to come.

And as Jude is exclusively asking for Normandy, he might be more interested in American and British aircrafts, than in Russian aircrafts.

But apart from that points you are absolutely right.

As Yogi pointed out, and assuming the interest of the OP in the Normandy battles, the reason why I recommended it is because of the connective pieces between the two. The two parts complement each other extremely well.

I wholeheartedly recommended the entire series but let's get them flying something that connects most closely to the stated interests first and then we'll try and get them to pickup the rest ?
