Racing sim for VR recommendation?

Hey gang,

I don't really participate or know of any good racing sim forums so thought I might ask here.

Recently I found my long lost original Logitech Momo Force racing wheel. The red one. Wife was cleaning out the attic and found it in a suitcase we

apparently packed it in when we moved here over 4 years ago. I used to use it heavily back in the Papyrus Nascar Racing days. Been a long time.

I hooked it up to check it out, appears everything is recognized properly in Windows 10. Mostly the axis seem smooth with the exception of the

brake pedal - it shows a little jitteriness when depressed fully. Gas axis and steering wheel axis look ok.

So before I invest in a more recent new wheel setup, thought I would try out a good racing sim and see how I enjoy it in VR.

Right now I am considering probably either Project Cars 2 or the new Project Cars 3. Seems to be a nice diversity of cars.

I like F1 and Indy cars, seems it might have a little of that. I am assuming EA's Formula One sim does not have VR support.

Much thanks for any suggestions, if I find I enjoy it and want to stick with it also in addition to my flight sims, I will invest in a new wheel setup.

Automobilista 2...

Wow I had not heard about that one, looks really nice and may have plenty to offer for me.

Thanks!

I've been on iRacing since the beginning, great sim and my favorite. If you like Nascar this is the one to get. Your rig is pretty beefy you could probably run it in VR good. If you want something a little more casual check out Project Cars 2 or 3 or Accetto Corisca,

If you want diversity. Get Assetto corsa. More tracks and cars than you can imagine. It is still a great sim after all these years.

Tons of mods

Is iRacing still primarily a multiplayer game?

I love Nascar but I only want to do single player.

Thanks,

Well both Project Cars 3 and Automobilista 2 look very good.

Tough choice.

I assume both these sims require buying through Steam?

iRacing does have AI now, but honestly I don't think it's worth the price and subscription for just playing offline right now. It's only worth it if you like playing online against other real people. I'd get one of the other Steam racers for $30-$60 and have at it.

I think the Dirt Rally games are good in VR too check out Dirt Rally 2.

Ok thanks.

I have made an executive decision and went with Automobilista 2. Got my Logitech Momo Force all hooked up and working,

and am downloading the game from Steam now.

Been about 15 years for me since I have done a racing sim. Look forward to it in VR.

Thanks again guys for the feedback!

Edit: I used to do nothing but online racing back in the days of Papyrus. Spent many hours each week doing so, even ran a league at one time. Just don't know that

I would want to get back into MP any more.

I wonder if it natively supports Oculus or if have to run through Steam VR, or maybe Open Composite. Will find out soon enough.

Automobilista 2 is a good looking racing game. And it really is impressive seeing it in VR. I was pleased to see it supported Oculus

natively.  I am able to run pretty high graphics and performance appears great.

Took me a bit to get the old Logitech Momo Force working right with it.

I first had to find the old software for it, downloaded the software dated 2010 to get it to work properly.

Then the game seemed to struggle recognizing the gas and brake pedals properly. I finally got that done somehow.

Been running some solo laps and having a good time, surprised this old wheel setup still operates so good.

Not sure how much sim racing I may do, will just have to see. I am having fun with it right now though.

Will see how I do against the AI in a race after some more practice.

Have you got this too Trooper?  I've been looking forward to Project Cars 3 but.....so I'm considering this.

So I figured out this morning why I had so much trouble getting my Logitech Momo wheel and pedals set up and working

properly in the game. Turns out, the game has two individual settings, one for 2d on monitor and one for VR mode.

I was starting the game in 2d monitor to make my settings, and they were not applying to the VR mode.

So I start in VR mode, and the image on the monitor is live and able to make adjustments on the monitor for it.

Now they are all sticking properly lol.

Neat feature for those that might like the game setup to run either on monitor or in VR with individual settings for each.

Yes mate... it still has a ways to go to have something like the content and career structure that project cars one and two had, but I feel it will get bigger and better as time goes on.

I think the AI functions better than Project Cars as well.

Also Race Room Racing Experience is free to download on steam if anyone is interested...  :good:

My app 17-18 year old original red Logitech Momo bit the dust today. Seems the whole gear assembly inside must have broke.

I guess I can't complain it served me well for a long time.

Ordered a G29 through Amazon and it will be here Monday.

Here is your start for racing https://www.racedepartment.com/forums/ Its a very friendly and nice forum. Also ask these guys all about VR, some do have real VR knowledge and sure they will help you.

Keep in your mind what genre you wanting to play and if it is arcade, single play with AI or mp. Iracing will cost you an monthly fee, so you do not own the game. Make a list on wanting, nice to have and no needed.

As an sample in my case I wanting to play in VR and using specific cars. Prewar, Lemans before 1973, and F1 before the wings, all on circuit from the same timeframe. So with the help of the forum, I did order AC with the full DLC.

The other game I did order was Rfactor 2 but I’m not playing that much.

If I was you I would try the free2try download from Raceroom on Steam, to start with.

Thanks much appreciated.  I just got my new G29 wheel so going to set it up and resume some Automobilista 2 practice laps.

Think if reading this all; Raceroom, Assetto Corsa2 and Automobilista 2 are the real deal for you. If it was about the lots of old circuits and old cars mods it was definitely Assetto Corsa1.

have fun, sure your next trip is making a DIY drive wind simulator, road impact shaker, (as a both I do have) or an handbrake and the cream an complete moving chair. Yep Jason, those race simulator studios are not that secretly about telemetry.

LOL I hear ya. Already have the wind to some extent, my Mitsubishi ductless A/C until is right in front of me up on the wall blowing

down into my face. I live in a pretty warm climate and am in the garage so it really helps.

Really enjoying Automobilista 2 and my new G29 wheel so far. Just ordered the shifter for it as well. And the sim immediately

recognized the wheel and made default assignments for it which was nice.

Trying to decide if Project Cars 3 would be for me or not. It does not have tire wear or pitstops so I know I would miss that.

And from what I have read it seems somewhat similar to how IL-2 GB started out with the XP points , and it has leveling up also.

But is simpler, and with AMB 2 I have the hardcore covered fairly well I think.

I will have a look at the other two you mentioned also, thanks. I have to say a racing sim in VR is quite exhilarating, much like IL-2 GB is.

Received my Wheel Stand Pro and got the new G29 with shifter all mounted up.

Nice piece of kit. Included instructions were horrible, thankfully Wheel Stand Pro has some good videos of assembly on YouTube.

Now I am ready to rumble!

Ran a few races yesterday with it, mounting is very solid and able to conveniently move in and out as needed. Also can be easily folded down if needed for storing.
