TG-55Panthercules Posted September 2, 2020 Posted September 2, 2020 Hey Folks - those of you who no longer frequent the RoF forums may have missed the following post by a fellow who has built and flies a DH-4 and who is currently engaged in a project to create a documentary focused on a couple of American Squadrons that flew the DH-4 during WWI. His post describing the project has been pasted in below: The documentary titled LEGENDS OF THE SKY: THE LIBERTY DH4 tells the story of this amazing aircraft from its inception through its lifespan. Of course it was made for combat, we have interviewed two aviation historical experts who have shared two incredible true stories of American Aero squadron missions. The 50th Aero Squadron mission to help save the Lost Battalion in the Argonne Forest. That aircraft #6 flew low level supply missions, sometimes beneath the hilltops, with German machine gun often raining down on them from two sides until they were finally hit after their third pass. The crashed, pilot hit first in head, observer trying to fly it from the back but with no training, he crashed the DH and died on way to hospital. They both were awarded America's highest Award for bravery, the Medal of Honor. The second mission is the story of a DH4 of the 166th Aero Squadron that was on a bombing mission in formation with other DH4s. Flak hit his airplane and blew out a portion of the fuselage just behind the observer. Both pilot and observer were ok, but observer wounded. The DH fell out of formation, engine trouble as well. Jagdstaffel 12 was nearby and 6 of their Fokker D7's dove on the DH. They shot the engine so it stopped and several flying wires. The Observer though badly wounded continued to fire. We have a letter from the pilot that describes each event as it was happening. We would like to provide the letters as the description and have you create the video action of these two events. You can check out the thread on the RoF forums here: https://riseofflight.com/forum/topic/57115-help-make-ww1-dh4-documentary-pbs/ Gooseh and I will be working with this fellow to provide the existing skins and create any new skins he needs for the project, so I think we have that aspect covered. However, there is a definite need for skilled video makers, mission creators and pilots to fly the planes for the combat sequences. I know a lot of those folks who used to do such great work with RoF videos have moved on over here to Flying Circus, but I'm hopeful that some of you would be willing to return to work with RoF for a while to help out with this exciting project. If so, please go post over in that thread on the RoF forum and/or contact the OP by PM or otherwise to let him know what help you might be able to provide. 2 1
