Should free sync stop screen tearing?

Hi folks... I have an RX 580 8GB NITRO+ AMD card and a 2k Iiyama monitor which supports Free Sync.  I have free sync enabled in the monitor settings, I'm using display port and I understand AMD works with free sync. Freesync is enabled in Radeon software.  However I still get bad tearing in game especially panning head left to right.  I have tried enabling Radion Enhanced sync but makes no difference. The ONLY thing that works is enabling vsync in game but a get a massive performance hit. I'm using FSAA. Any help much appreciated... Cheers

Freesync only works within a specified frame rate range, based on the monitor. If you turn on vsync in game it should only be triggered when you drop out of that frame rate range. What are the specs of your monitor, and what FPS are you getting? Also, do you have the FPS limiter set in game? I think you need to set that at monitor refresh rate for vsync to pick up properly when you drop out of freesync range.

Also, post your graphics settings from within Il2 and any settings from the driver configuration. I suspect running 2k resolution on that card with the settings you have is making it struggle and drop out of freesync FPS range. I run 1440p on my gtx1660 super and had to turn down some settings to keep my monitor within freesync range, and from what I can see the 1660 is a more powerful card than your rx580, so you will likely have to turn down some settings for it to drive 2k resolution at acceptable frame rates with no tearing.

I do not have an AMD graphics card however am using my GTX 1080 with a freesync/gysnc compatible 2 k monitor . I found this article quite helpful and the settings suggested work fine ( good performance and no tearing with framerate locked at 100 fps on 144 mhz monitor .) I am sure some settings may be labelled differently than Nvidia settings with AMD control panel but maybe you can figure out the settings inferred to use from this. May be worth a try,, Gsync 101

Hi RedKestrel ... thanks for taking  the time ... The screen in a IIYAMA ProLite XUB2792QSU-B1 which has Refresh rate: 70 Hz  ....

 

 

driver wise I have nothing special enabled except free sync on

 

Here are my settings in game .... I get between 40 -60 FPS  in game  which looks ok to me  .... what do you think ?

Maybe you get screen tearing when moving your head because the FPS is dropping and vsync is not on to compensate. You will only get a performance impact from vsync when it is activated, I think. Likely the freesync threshold is only from 48 to 70 hz so as soon as you drop out of that range you will get screen tearing if vsync isn’t there to pick up the slack. Try and find out what your monitor freesync min and max hertz are. Try turning on vsync in your amd settings and leaving it off in game to see if performance is better than in game vsync.

 

also you probably need to go down from Ultra to High preset for performance. Shadows might need to go to medium, they’re not much different in high and the performance impact can be substantial.

I had no issues with FreeSync. Just enabled it on the monitor menu and then in Radeon Control Panel. No other form of vsync needed. No tearing at all.

 

Now I use Enhanced Vsync only as my monitor is a GSync one. Still no tearing in games. No other vsync setting enabled.
