357th_Esco Posted August 26, 2020 Posted August 26, 2020 I see some people complaining about plane visibility on other threads and how zoom is unrealistic. I don’t have issues spotting when using the default zoom. It’s when I zoom out for a better field of view that contacts become difficult to find. My monitor is an old 24inch 1080p. What would you guys think about the statement below. Make the default view the maximum zoom with the ability to zoom out for wider field of view. Then give us binoculars to look for distant targets. The tanks already have it in game so all devs have to do is apply it to the planes. Pilots used binoculars. That would make it more realistic!
[DBS]Browning Posted August 26, 2020 Posted August 26, 2020 Binoculars were not especially common in cockpits and at least one study from the 50s suggests they do not help in aircraft spotting anyway.
Retnek Posted August 26, 2020 Posted August 26, 2020 I had a talk with crew member of a maritime recon plane in the 1960s. He told me the usual vibrations of a propeller plane cruising straight and level made it difficult to use binoculars. As soon as turbulence etc additionally shook the plane, for him there was no way to use binoculars for scanning. He and most of the crew scanned by human eye alone. With sunglasses sometimes, there might have been special yellow filter glasses, too. Binoculars were used to check suspicious details in the endless waters or real contacts like ships etc. - a shaky mess very useful to get rid of your lunch.
danielprates Posted August 26, 2020 Posted August 26, 2020 The use of binuculars is conspicuously absent in period reports, such as famous pilot's biographies. Makes me think that they were not standard issue in fighters or, if they were, pilots would not use them.
Lusekofte Posted August 26, 2020 Posted August 26, 2020 (edited) There are Some videos and pictures of maritime observers using binoculars. I have seen it used on FW 189 flying over a huge area with Russian pows. I read about a Norwegian Sunderland crew mentioning binoculars once. I think they might have been used in identification purposes only. Edited August 26, 2020 by 216th_LuseKofte 1

Heliopause Posted August 26, 2020 Posted August 26, 2020 Well a rearview mirror could help a bit.....
