JBullard Posted August 24, 2020 Posted August 24, 2020 I have been playing IL-2 for about a month. I bought it because I am a WWII buff particularly regarding the eastern front. Maybe this question has been asked and answered already, but I will ask anyway. Based on my understanding of the war on the eastern front, the Yak-1 was involved in the Battle of Moscow and the Yak-1b, Yak-7b, Yak-9 participated in the Battle of Stalingrad. Why weren't they made available in the respective battles in IL-2?
Mitthrawnuruodo Posted August 24, 2020 Posted August 24, 2020 (edited) If you're talking about Career, it's generally because the particular variants featured in the game did not participate. See for example previous discussions about the Yak-1, Yak-7b. It's not just Yaks; there are many significant aircraft variants missing from certain battles because the models changed between 1941 and 1943. Edited August 24, 2020 by Mitthrawnuruodo

The Yak 1 Series 127 is apparently a Kuban Yak 1. The Yak 9 did not fight at Stalingrad (apparently wiki is incorrect per Black Six's research) and really came on line in 43. So the missing Yak is actually a very early Yak 1. That's to the best of my knowledge. I will let others correct me if I'm wrong.

As BlackSix has wrote elsewhere, there were very few Yak-9s built in 1942, and those that were built had a lot of problems.
ShamrockOneFive Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 The Yak-7B we have is also a Series 36 which is one of the last out of the gate before the transition started to happen to the Yak-9 so we have a very late version of that aircraft too - because it came with Battle of Kuban and that makes sense there. What we don't have are the earlier versions of these.
ww2fighter20 Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 To my understanding we are missing an early yak1 for Moscow, early yak7b and early yak1b for Stalingrad, no other yaks anymore for Kuban.

According to Airpages.ru, the Yak-9 did fight in the Battle of Stalingrad in late December 1942. I would assume these would be the Yak-9 series 1. I don't know how reliable Airpages.ru is, but here is the link https://airpages.ru/eng/ru/yak9.shtml

It's been often repeated and it's repeated here too. When someone like BlackSix from the dev team who does the actual deep dives into the first hand historical archives and looks for the locations of the aircraft aircraft it becomes clear that they weren't there.
