Will damage from exploding ground targets ever be modeled?

I ask because it's easy to snipe (for example) an artillery position at extremely close range then fly through the explosion close enough to almost hit the target with the bottom of the plane but, come through without even the slightest scratch.  

I would think that a gun like that with it's ammo stockpile detonating would cause a shockwave and shrapnel damage if you flew directly over / through the explosion as closely as we can in-game.  

Obviously, there are other ground objects that can explode quite forcefully (such as locomotives) as well, yet there is no damage if you fly extremely close to the explosion.  

The main reason I am wondering is that this does not seem to promote a need for realistic ground attack gunnery at all.

Explosion effects are just that - effects.

There’s no “mechanical” or shrapnel element to them. You’re talking about a major addition to the game mechanics.

Some targets could probably be assign the same effect as taking splash damage from a 50kg bomb, unless it's more complicated than that.  If 50kg is too much how about assigning the splash damage from Flying Circus - sized bombs?   I don't see why certain ground targets when "on destroyed" couldn't be treated as "bombs" at that moment.  

 

If that was the case, then the only mechanic that would change is not being able to single-20mm snipe things like arty positions from 100m.  You'd have to fire from farther away, just like reality.
