Mm1ut1 Posted August 19, 2020 Posted August 19, 2020 My C drive where my Steam/Il-2 files reside has 11 gig free space. When BON is released will this be enough? I really don’t want to transfer to another drive if I don’t have to. Don’t want to take a chance screwing things up. BTW how much space does the game currently use ? Except for a few scripted campaigns I have all the add-ons except ROF. Thanks!
DD_Crash Posted August 19, 2020 Posted August 19, 2020 I really think you should get a much larger hard drive as Windows doesnt like C drive filling up. My 1C folder is 97 gigs but my DCS is 300! 2

If the BoN map/planes are of similar quality to the other modules, it would likely be enough. *However* If your drive only has 10GB left, I would recommend getting another drive anyhow. Because of the way file systems work, disks get slower as they fill up. A good rule of thumb is that you should always keep at least 10% free; get much past that and you *will* suffer from a slower system. 2
Boneboys Posted August 19, 2020 Posted August 19, 2020 Well I've just updated to version 4.009 and it is 15.87 GB which seems overly large. I haven't played for a while so I may have missed some previous update, I believe the last download included the SP missions for FC but a 15. + GB would kill your HD, even if Steam compression is generally better optimised.

You've missed at least one update. 4.009 was 2.6GB. Also, most files are overwritten instead of added. The entire game is packed inside .gtp files of ~900MB each. If even one byte inside such a file changes or a single mission is added, the whole 900MB file has to be redownloaded. The extra required size on your disk is *much* smaller than the filesize you downloaded. 1

Yes, see https://pureinfotech.com/why-solid-state-drive-ssd-performance-slows-down/ for example. Although naturally because of the much higher speed of an SSD the effect will be much less obvious. I kinda just assumed it's a HDD as I got the impression from his post that he's had it for a while. With only 11GB left I would look for a new disk anyhow, or start making some space. I've had a couple of occasions where I had similar amounts of disk space and some download or another (usually a game/windows/whatever update) or even a program that wrote some large files to disk ate all the remaining space in the blink of an eye leaving me with too little space to do anything. On Windows the OS started to refuse to do some things with ~3GB left, I think, but on Linux I've literally been to 0 bytes remaining ? Generally I do practise what I preach and clean up much sooner, but somehow my disk seems to fill up faster than I can empty it ? If you're looking for a fast way to lose some GBs in Windows, try the Disk Cleanup program, and press "Clean up system files". Especially if run for the first time, this can save literally tens of GBs. You can basically check all the boxes without much risk, but do be aware that there's also the user folders Downloads and Recycle Bin that you may not want emptied. The Recycle Bin shouldn't really matter if it's emptied, but then there's the customer (I work at an IT service desk as a side job) who used his Recycle Bin to store all his important files... until a co-worker of mine unwittingly deleted those in exactly this operation ? NO.20_W_M_Thomson Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 I tried doing an update for DCS but only had 40 gigs left, didn't want to stress out my SSD too much so have to wait for an extra drive. Thanks for the info. 4 hours ago, AEthelraedUnraed said: Yes, see https://pureinfotech.com/why-solid-state-drive-ssd-performance-slows-down/ for example.
