4.009: Pre-Update Flight Records Do Not Load

Recommended Posts

Subsequent to the latest update, I am unable to load any flight records made prior to the update, however new flight records do load.  As you see, the game lives-up to its stellar reputation of furnishing helpful error messages:

I won't say what I'm thinking, since you already know.

What do you mean 'that way'?  There have been many updates since I started recording tracks, but this is the first time I've had this issue.

Al is right. I just tried it and get the same error. With previous updates I was always able to load and play older tracks.

It depends what gets changed in a patch , major patches have in past broken replays, this is one of those patches.

There was a previous discussion on this issue somewhere in this forum if u can find it(searching in here is not always easy to find old posts)

here is a previous example of this problem

Ok thanks Stix. No great drama. It's never happened to me before in the last 4 or 5 updates (I think) so I was a little curious. Luckily all the tracks I had were pretty crappy anyway lol. But others .... well they may be a little cross.

Ya its because the whole mission is saved with the replay, and as some of the data is compiled in binary form (not the source code), so if game engine updates it can break the replay.

Same with me. I have flight records going back over two years, now none of them will load. Never had this issue with a prior patch.

Is it just me or did last patch wipe out saved Mission Tracks....  Again?

Luke, this NEVER happened in RoF ... ever! Trust me. All my skin preview images are taken in flight records, so I can crank them out without wasting much time on it. It was that way back then, and I'm trying to do the same now, but the the improved shading update and now this blew up all of my work. If they want people to support their product and provide free content like skins and missions, for the love of God they need to do whatever they can to eliminate this issue. It's maddening!

Edit: allow me to add this disclaimer ... it never happened in RoF during the 2 to 3 year period that I was using flight records for my preview images. I did find evidence in the Rise of Flight update history that one update ... ONE ... update 1.028, in Sep. 2012 caused all previously recorded files to become obsolete. The developers showed enough concern to warn the community in advance (see image below), and as far as I know, seemed to make every effort in avoiding this from happening again. I could not find any evidence that any more updates rendered flight records obsolete, and personally I never remember this happening ever. The 1.028 update happened long before my extensive flight records use.

It has happened before in Great Battles.

This behaviour is standard in games with a replay functionality. Maintaining backward compatibility while improving the game is a significant technical challenge that's usually not worthwhile. When things change in an update, a game might literally not understand events in old records without special handling.

The track format has changed, and old tracks are not played in version 4.009.
