I have an odd request.  Does anyone have the older 2K templates for skins?

Why do you ask when better 4K are available?

I use an archaic program to skin, Paint Shop Pro 8, a 32 bit program that cannot load 4K templates, ("not enough memory").  As far as I've been able to determine a 32 bit program cannot be adjusted to access/use enough memory for a 4K sized file.

I know, I know, just get Photoshop or GIMP or even a newer version of PSP.

I'm Old School and I have been skinning for almost 20 years using my dinosaur program.  It's interface is more text driven than newer programs and frankly, I know ho to work the heck out of it.  I have made several skins using the few 2K templates I have and there have been no complaints about them being 2K.  I don't have a 4K monitor and personally I can hardly see the difference between them.  I am not looking to make oil droplet leaks out of an engine.

I have GIMP 2.10.4 and tried to resize the 4K down to 2K and saving as a .psd but when I try an open it in PSP8 it says it's "not a valid .psd file".  PSP8 though does open and save in .psd so something about GIMP or the .psd features is not liked by my fossil-fuel program.  Are there any options for saving I am missing?  (currently using "export as > by extention > .psd')

Questions:

1. Is there a way to use GIMP resize and get PSP8 to recognize the exported .psd file?

2. Does anybody have, or have links to, the original 2K templates for BoS/BoM/BoK that they would share with me?

If you think I'm just being a lazy old sod I'm sorry.   I'm just trying to use the tools at hand to skin for this game without taking the additional time to learn/relearn a tool I'm already familiar with.

I only use these programs for skinning in IL-2 so I am not very motivated by any other use.

thanks in advance for any help.

szelljr,

Thanks.  I already have all of those but the 2K versions are the only ones I can use at the current time as per my post above.

I was hoping to find as many more as possible in the old 2K format.  I realize that most of the templates released since Bodenplatte and going forward are/will be 4K.  I'll deal with that down the road.

Slightly off topic; have you tried Gimp? It's pretty powerful for freeware and improving pretty consistently as well.

Hello Beebop

I have similar problems working with 4K skins, so I turn them to 2K in the native Gimp format, .xcf

If you want I can share with you some templates, by converting them from 4K to 2K before sending to you.

Just tell me the planes you want.

Here, make a test:

OK.  That worked.  This is the kind of solution that just might work using what tools I have now.

I am going to try and take the 4K templates I have, save them as resized (2K) .xcf files, then export them as .psd files.  If it works it solves my problem.

I'll get back with everyone and let you know how it worked out.

A FEW MINUTES LATER....

I must be doing something wrong.

I opened the 4K image in GIMP.

I scaled the image to 2048.

Image scaled and layers were retained.

I saved as an .xcf file to the desktop.

I cleared GIMP and dragged the .xcf file into GIMP.

It opened with all layers intact.

I chose "Export  as Photoshop image"

It exported to desktop but during the process this screen appeared:

gimp-error-message.jpg

The resulting .psd file displayed an error message in PSP8, "File contains internal error" and doesn't open.

Should I be doing things differently?

Sorry.  Thanks but the P-38.xcf you sent did convert OK.

If fact when I converted the .xcf to a .psd I got all the layers whereas your .psd had only a few merged layers.  Everything was there but fewer layers to work with.

Thanks anyway.  I appreciate your helping.

Meanwhile, what I was showing with that other screenshot is the P-47D-22 Public 4K.  Now that is a BoN plane and maybe things have changed in how the templates are being made (?)
