One of the most disappointing things for me about this sim is the TrackIR support.

Yes.....it works, kind of, but I cannot get a satisfactory result even after much setting tweaking. I have also messed with my seat height, the position of the monitor camera, etc, to no avail.

If you are in a dogfight with an opponent I find looking up to follow the target just does not work very well, this could be in a vertical or a turn fight. I just cannot track the targets.

I am sure there must be others who feel this way and I think its time the developers fixed it.

For example, if I fire up Cliffs of Dover with the same settings it all works beautifully and tracking the target is easy. It also works really well in DCS.

Sadly, for me the current implementation of TIR support really spoils the immersion of this sim.

Thoughts and work arounds welcome.

What is exactly going on. You say when you loop it doesn't work very well but what do you mean by that? Does it stop tracking? Is it not sensitive enough or is the ratio off?

I'm not using TrackIR but rather the cheaper alternative using OpenTrack and a Delanclip and I actually get a better experience in IL-2 versus DCS. My problem seems to be the sensitivity when looking to the right and what happens when the LED's get close. In Il-2, for whatever, reason, the movement seems to be a bit smoother. The opposite of your experience.

That leads me to believe that it's not implementation in the sim but rather some sort of configuration thing that's going on.

I don't use TIR, I use an EDTracker with OpenTrack and have no issues looking around. Lots of people use TrackIR here and other than occasional bugs or setup issues I've never heard people say it is better or worse than other sims.

Could you post your TIR and game camera settings here? It could just be that there is a setting or something that is not working well. There are settings for camera inertia, smoothing, etc. in game that can make things feel jittery or sluggish if you don't have them set to your preference.

Guys - I appreciate both of your posts but as you say neither of you use TrackIR.

I don't believe it is the settings for the reasons I have already explained. The fact that it does not work like this in 2 other military flight sims

In this sim looking directly up to nearly 90 degrees, just doesn't really seem to work and then if you rotate your head to look at at high 3 to 4 O'Clock position or the corresponding 9 to 8 O'Clock positions it just doesn't seem to respond.

I will post my settings shortly and see if that reveals an error on my part.

Many people use TrackIR without this problem. This is likely a setting issue. I suspect that your Pitch maxes out too early, and if you adjust them upwards you will get more range of motion.

Try looking at Requiem's profile posted in the first post in this thread:

I use slightly modified Requiem profile for all, DCS, CLOD, BOX.  Works great most of the time...

Ditto here, I use track IR and have no issues with BoX, CLoD, or DCS.  Try as many different profiles as you can find and see what works for you, get one that feels close to good and tweak from there.  I myself got lost as hell trying to tweak to my liking from baseline, I'm sure I could have gotten there but it could have taken a while.

I took the default "smooth" profile and made some tweaks to the sensitivity for the turn axes (look up/down/right/left) until I was happy. Jump in a quick mission, look around, tweak, look around. I think the default was too sensitive looking left/right and not enough up/down. Moving a few knobs was enough to get it right.

Requiem's was way too sensitive for me.

If Track IR was as broken as you say, the forum would be ON FIRE about it.

Now many users are using VR headset, but I'm guessing before that, a fair share of VR users used to have track IR... And there was never such a complaint.

I use track IR and have no problems at all, BUT the settings I used to have for other games didn't work really well in il2, and the other way arround is also true.

One fact that gave me issues about how looking arround works in il2, either with track IR or mouse, is the fact that you can not look "up" past straight up.

Example, in a turn fight you start looking up to follow the enemy, once you reach looking straight up, you can not "keep looking up" so you end up looking at your 6... In the track IR software, you can do this, but ingame it is limited, it does not mater if using trackIR or mouse.

The way to do it is, look up until straight up, then left or right, and start looking down until your looking straight at your 6.

OK guys thanks. Lots of suggestions here.

I had tried Requiems profile before my post and it wasn't quite working for me. And why should it as our physical set ups are probably very different, so I have edited a default profile.

I have done some more tweaking and I can use it ok.

Cheers all

What, people on this forum complaining incessantly about something? I don't believe it; everyone on here is a good natured :)
