Beirut Port Explosion

Looks like a chemical det to me, liked vaporized benzine or even ammonium nitrate. Causalities are going to be massive.

That is the most likely cause. fertilizer explosion. looking by the multiple vids showing that huge blast wave. NH4NO3 only needs 170deg celsius to go boom. That 1921 BASF explosion in Ludwigshafen really left its mark.

From video it looks like that was the case - a smaller primary explosion, and then the big one right after.

 

What a horrible thing. I want to hope but with a detonation that big who knows how many people have been killed and injured.

Looks like what happened in China when they blew up Tianjin harbor.

 

An initial explosion followed by fire among the storage site and after a while the whole rest of whatever they stacked up there went up. Doubtful that only fertilizer got stored there (like in Tiajin), there‘s plenty other explosive stuff like sodium cyanide that is extremely poisenous as well.

 

This is why one should keep harbor authorities well funded and don‘t let people just stack everything as they please.

Horrendous. Gives some idea of what the Black Tom explosion in 1916 New York was like. The footage taken from a boat at sea shows the blast wave and mushroom cloud even better, I can't give a link to it but it is on the BBC news website.

 

It sounds like it was a fireworks warehouse. Storing that much explosive material in a city seems like something to avoid.

From what I've been reading, fireworks were definitely involved. There are videos showing what looks like a large number of minor explosions before the final detonation, which was almost certainly ammonium nitrate fertiliser, along with who knows what else.

Edit: From what I´ve read in the german press: The Lebanon Government says it was a 2750 ton Ammoniumnitrat explosion. The death toll is now 73 dead with 2.750 injured and they are still counting.

Yep. The reddish hue of the plume post det is also likely grain dust given the elevator next to the site.

Tianjin immediately came to mind.

 

I remember reading something back in 2016 that Lebanese officials confiscated some insane quantity of ammonium nitrate from a Moldovan cargo vessel, somewhere to the tune of 3000 tons. Turns out it was stored in a warehouse right next to the grain elevator and can be seen on fire right before the explosion.

Their power grid is on the verge of failing and their economy on the verge of complete collapse. Easier said than done.

Exactly the same thing happened in 2001 in my city of Toulouse...It was terrible.....The same chemical : Ammonium Nitrate...Poor people...

Six years of storing 2,750 tons of the stuff? Surprised it didn’t happen sooner, if indeed that was the case. My first knee jerk reaction was how it looked like a tactical nuke strike, not that it was mind you.
 

That second blast caught me totally off guard. The damage alone from the shock waves coming at you was something to witness.

I used to worry about Deep Fakes and increasingly realistic CGI.
Now I realize that was pointless. People will believe an obvious fake that a teenager can cook up in his mom's basement, so what's the point in being fancy about it?

It’s really much easier to ask why would anyone drop a bomb on that area of Beirut?  Right on top of an already existing bomb.  In this, and so many other cases, the conspiracy theories are just moronic nonsense.

I would like to genuinely ask RAY-EU why is he more  tempted to believe the twisted consiparcy theory instead of the dramatic but simplier version of an accident due to negligence and corruption of some administrators ?
