BackupOne Posted August 3, 2020 Posted August 3, 2020 Anyone think tracer is a bit too bright, it does help alot with spotting but flying high and see a column of tracer over distance like alight show feel kinda weird. 1
Lusekofte Posted August 3, 2020 Posted August 3, 2020 This has been discusses since the very beginning. All agree with this
8ELT_Grzesiek Posted August 3, 2020 Posted August 3, 2020 I don't think it suits everyone, but let's see what the reality of the P-47 and P-51 looked like, in these videos you can see what types of ammunition were loaded into the tapes. Some of the missiles are visible only when they hit the target and are not routing missiles. They are intertwined in tapes with light and light smoke routing missiles, which were made in a very nice way in IL2 1946 by modders and in DCS for the P-47. My conclusion is that each pilot had his own preferences as to the type of ammunition used and he decided to some extent what the ground crew technicians should do about it. It's a pity we don't have this choice in the game for US planes.

A lot of games have been ruined by people who look at crappy old pictures, instead of going out to see how the world looks and how light works. Modded Il-2 and CLOD are prime example of games messed up by people who look at grainy photos, instead of the real world. Edited August 3, 2020 by Jaws2002 2 1
Rei-sen Posted August 3, 2020 Posted August 3, 2020 Tracers in CloD look way better than in this game. Even in 1946 they look more realistic.

They looked better in the original CLOD release. Actualy, when CLOD was released, it had the most advanced lighting engine in Flight sims.....Then Illya got in it, with his dirty boots, and "fixed it" . And I know they look better than in this game. I was just pointing out that you don't calibrate lighting effects, based on washed out, 70 years old, black and white photos and micro film. Maybe then we'll stop "clinging" Edited August 3, 2020 by 8ELT_Grzesiek

Every chemical agent used in traces burns in a certain color . Study how it burns, how that reacts with the human eye under all lighting conditions and try to see how to best adapt that to the computer screen. Just because the videos from ww2 look overexposed, scratched, desaturated and with a sepia filter over everything , it doesn't mean the wold looked like that. Tracers burn the same today, as they did back then. Edited August 3, 2020 by Jaws2002

As for your claim on pilots getting a hand in their ammunition belts, that wasn't really the case. Belt's were pretty standardized across all forces throughout the war, and modifications weren't made on the individual levels. Sometimes on the squadron level allowances would be made for certain tactics. One example is of 8th Air Force 47's loading up with all tracer for the opening seconds of their burst, in order to spook any oncoming Germans with a wash of bright fire, but this was a one off event.
