pauljvallance Posted July 28, 2020 Posted July 28, 2020 Hi, just set up the joytokey app with the XBox One Controller, and pitch yaw and roll are working fine but even at the very beginning of the training flight the yellow biplane wants to go up and to the left even without touching the joysticks. I was anticipating that the plane would fly in a straight line without having to make constant readjustments of the controller. Am sure I'm missing something but I can't see what I'm doing wrong.. Any help would be.... helpful ;-)
69thSpiritus Posted July 28, 2020 Posted July 28, 2020 You'll need to utilize trim pretty much constantly in this game, set rudder and elevator trim to buttons close by, also aileron trim if the aircraft has it. Any change in engine throttle or rpm will cause the plane to move due to torque, so you need to counter that by trim. There is also wind to account for which can change at different altitudes. Plus flying in straight lines will get you killed. Welcome. Jump online if you get the chance, there are people who are willing to help new guys out and show them the ropes.
dazako Posted July 28, 2020 Posted July 28, 2020 (edited) Outside of trying to explain the dynamics of flight I think your basic issue is you're going to have a rough time using a game controller. Despite all the fun of racing games for eg imagine trying to drive a car for real with a controller or keypad. It simply doesn't work outside the most general tasks. OK except James Bond once drove his car from the back seat with a phone app ! Cliffs is more a flight simulator than arcade game and planes react much as they do in real life. A joystick with twist rudder control, or better yet actual rudder pedals is the best way to logically and naturally apply input to an aircraft control surfaces. Just as driving a car needs a steering wheel. There's a constant balancing act between joystick, rudder and throttle that keeps a plane straight and level or turning, looping etc. Both hands and feet are doing things independently that eventually become cohesive. And then your flying ! And then some bugger comes along and shoots you full of holes. And then repeat the process. Daz Edited July 28, 2020 by dazako
Redwo1f Posted July 28, 2020 Posted July 28, 2020 (edited) If you are hard bent on staying with a controller rather than a joystick, and I promise I am not being facetious here, then here is a game that will work just fine with an x-box controller and is actually quite fun! (91% positive steam reviews). Was watching my son play it and got into it a bit myself as a diversion from time to time -- terrific game for what it is (and may be a lot easier for you to fly): https://store.steampowered.com/app/381020/Sky_Rogue/ Edited July 28, 2020 by Redwo1f
