il2crashesnfails Posted July 21, 2020 Posted July 21, 2020 I'm starting to think playing in the ground attack role is more fun then playing as a pure fighter? Or, maybe it is just the fact I cant Dogfight to save myself! I have a short compilation of some of the ground Attacks I have done! 5 6

I fly a lot of ground attack, only rarely flying pure fighter sorties. So when I fly fighter, it's more exciting due to the novelty. I think a lot of guys who fly fighter-only would benefit greatly from spending a few sorties moving mud, its a whole different part of the game that people shut themselves off from, even though it has its own challenges and rewards. BTW that angular bomb drop from the A-20 at 4:15 is an amazing bit of work! 1 1 2

Could not agree more. Also would make the fighter boys more effective at covering friendly ground pounders, and perhaps help the realisation that hanging around directly over friendly targets doesnt matter a hill of beans if you only hit the incoming bombers after they've dropped... One thing I particularly enjoy about the boBP planeset is that you can strap a bunch of bombs on your IX or '51, move some mud and clear out some AAA, and still then run as an effective fighter aircraft. unreasonable Posted July 21, 2020 Posted July 21, 2020 +1 Fun video to watch - and I agree, ground attack is a lot of fun and quite difficult to get right as well. 1

Exactly! I have been having alot of fun strapping some rockets on the fighters. They are very useful in stopping trains etc. Then if you have enough fuel you can turn your attention to other fighters or bombers to attack! 1
Raptorattacker Posted July 23, 2020 Posted July 23, 2020 Aahhh, bless him! Another classic from CnF! 1
JG1_Barton Posted July 23, 2020 Posted July 23, 2020 As a fighter guy ground attack is only more fun than air to air if you're talking about AI. Otherwise there is no comparison to the thrill of fighting another player in air to air. The targets are mostly stationary and easy to hit. Only challenge is getting in around AAA but even that can be mitigated or eliminated. Biggest challenge in ground attack is avoiding getting shot down by other players in multiplayer. A lot of the ground attackers on public servers just go on suicide runs beating up as much of the target as they can until they get killed to avoid having to fly home and back again. A lot of people don't understand how to steady their plane to shoot or judge range and adjust for bullet drop and ground attack can help with those things. If you can't shoot a ZIS truck and destroy it with a short and accurate burst from fairly close range you're most probably garbage in air to air gunnery as well. This is how I get used to a convergence range by seeing how the bullet arc effects aim point vs point of impact. And yes, that bomb drop was pretty sweet. 1
HR_Tumu Posted July 23, 2020 Posted July 23, 2020 I have really good times, hunting human tanks on finish virtual server. I agree , ground attack is really funny for me. 1

Aurora_Stealth Posted July 24, 2020 Posted July 24, 2020 Interesting thread, I've found it nice recently to take a break from a long stint of flying fighters. I agree, it's thrilling chasing or being chased by skilled players in fighters but it can get a bit frustrating and sometimes toxic after a while when so many players are focused on this - especially when you have groups of fighters teaming up on individual pilots (both ways round). Flying bombers and ground attack requires a different temperament I find... discipline, patience and some clever strategy is required to actually survive an audacious bombing run and this has its own thrill I find - especially when things go south and you hear and see your gunners go bananas and you watch the fighters attacking you overshoot. 1 2

The only remarkable detail of that b-picture "Flight of the Intruder" comes into my mind "Fighter ... make movies. Bomber pilots make history". That's debatable in Real Life (tm). But very true for the Il2-GB-online campaigns.

That is another aspect I enjoy. Trying to limp home after a bombing run.
