Hey Question: Drop Tanks???

Recommended Posts

Why don't we have drop tanks yet? I understand with area of the maps we have drop tanks are useless. However, the functionality should be available?

I was building a single player mission and wanted to simulate the common practice of P-51 and P-47 pilots dropping tanks during high altitude escort right when the 1st sight of enemy fighters was called out over the radio.

I think this is a functionality that should come with BoN.

Quite a few months ago, someone found the 108 gallon drop tank image in an unpacked file. No idea where it was but obviously they're already modeled, just not activated. Wish it were so as it would be great for screen shots and the like.

Read through the developer diaries/updates.

They were planned. They were working on it. It got delayed due to the complete damage model rebuild of all existing aircraft (which took months). The damage model work is expected to be done on fuel tanks next (and possibly hydraulics?). After that they may implement modelling of a fuel-selection/management system which will allow the introduction of drop-tanks.

I believe fuel management is in the short list for the next features.

Based on what has been said by the devs in different comments sprinkled here and there, this would include a simplified fuel tank selection, drop tanks, and API (incendiary) ammunition. I think there will also be a fuel damage rework as part of the changes.

After the big damage model overhaul they were turning to their fuel system overhaul. When the fuel system overhaul is in, we'll see the drop tanks added.

If Fuel and Hydraulics (hope for this!) are modelled this would surely elevate the sim some levels upwards. It would be all I'd want really. (Except maybe also tire blows and engine detonations)

Drop tanks should come with or some time after fuel system updates.

I'm wondering if there will be a choice of fuel tanks to chose from.

Both the Luftwaffe and die Allies had several different types of tanks. Some were just superficially different in details, others were entirely different designs.

The there's always the question about the smell of napalm in the morning...

Did I mention cluster-bombs?

If I had to guess 4.009 will have the new fuel system modeling, and the droptanks will either be in or slated for the next update after that. Just going from how long its been talking about. Its probably the primary focus for the engineering team outside of the flight models for the new planes.

A greater variety of ATG ordnance would be really cool, as long as the damage modeling could cope with it. I can see cluster bombs or napalm being pretty calculation-intensive.

I'd rather guess, or hope, spotting might be addressed before. We'll see.

There is already some modelling... for instance some aircraft have different flap behaviours related to hydraulics (and they tweaked the P-51 so that its flaps are down in the hangar in the last patch?). One can have a tire failure if there is too much side-slip during take-off (I believe)... and I believe the tank explosion chance is effected by how full the tanks are... and you can sometimes put out fires by diving.

P-51 flaps have always been down with the engine off. Otherwise, yes all of those things can happen.

Someone really needs to write an update feature list for Great Battles that highlights these things!

One main thing I'd like to see with fuel modeling is better self sealing tanks and being able to actually hit the fuel gauge to see how much I have.

I'd love to see hydraulic damage added so we can see gear drops, gear failure, flap failure, etc.

In WW II, those suckers were put in gliders right?

Actually the Tetrarch is the only one I know of which was used by the british in WW2. They were brought in with Hamilcar gliders. IIRC they were used in Normandy 1944 and in Operation Varsity 1945.

Broadly speaking, yes - jeeps and trailers were landed in gliders and artillery pieces developed for airborne forces too.

"increased fuel consumption" option can be added . That will create the necessity to chose drop tanks especially in multiplayer maps.

Just an option, it is no more unrealistic than having a GPS assisted map

Why? We already have the option for longer flight times in multiplayer.
