When flying 109s there are sometimes a formation of four. If I am the the number four guy who am I supposed to support? The number three guy?

Sometimes the leader breaks left and number 2 and 3 go right. Then I am confused as to who I am supposed to go with. So I just follow the leader.

Are wingmen legitimate in PWCG/IL2? Which guy should I follow?

I have not tried being a flight leader. Do the game flight leader orders work? I wish there was a leader order toggle button so I can go through and select in VR.

Another thing I have observed is the leader will loiter and await the rest of the flight sometimes. Which is good. But sometimes he just hauls ass and and I am on my own. Usually with MIGs on my tail. ?

The AI will not fly any sort of team formation ever.  Technically you should follow the #3 if you are #4.  Do not expect teamwork from your AI mate.

The only thing PWCG can do per the AI is put them in the air with a few suggestions.  Beyond that they generally make up their own mind.

In my experience, there are two AI. The flight and the leader. The leader flying in one direction and his complete flight (I use up to eight planes per flight) flying in the other direction is the usual behaviour. Therefore I always try to support the leader, which is not too easy anyway, as he often does really crazy stuff. Which might be one of the reasons, why leaders are usually the first, who get killed.

And as Pat stated above, there is no teamwork, so the flight will most likely simply ignore, that the leader is under attack.

The AI even as flight lead is "bad". There have been times as a lead I see things I want to investigate and my wingman keep on following the patrol route (even though want i want to investigate is on the route!). Then as leader they will ignore targets in the air sometimes even on patrol/intercept. Plus in a firefight unless you are the leader you cannot fire a flare for cover or to even indicate where you are after a battle or an area that you need support in. I think that is just the Il-2 engine.
