Todt_Von_Oben Posted July 13, 2020 Posted July 13, 2020 (edited) I enjoy writing fictional "war stories" based on dogfights in FC1, but it takes a long time and still images lack the full effect of motion footage. Looking for a tutorial on how to post Flight Record files as videos online. Cole explained it once to me years ago but I can't find that info, forgot how it worked, and the process might have changed by now, anyway. I have FRAPS and that was part of it but I forget how it's done. Any help? Edited July 14, 2020 by LukeFF
J37_Daedallus Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 Hi Happy to tell you how I get there. ? 1st of all I got rid of fraps, I used to use it but it is nowhere near as good as recording in windows 10 now is. Once you've edited your track to tell a story, record it in windows 10, and you can either host it on your google drive and post a link, or a simpler way is to set up a Youtube channel like mine https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXmXU3LmISQ99zFgYDFKj-A/ and you can post a link to the video you want to show in the forums. If you are wanting to be a bit more creative, you can get software editing progs, I use HD Movie maker Pro, it is very cheap (under £10) and simple to use, you can split, trim and enhance scenes, add text and a soundtrack. If you need any other help, just pm me. Looking forward to seeing your creative efforts. cheers
Todt_Von_Oben Posted July 14, 2020 Author Posted July 14, 2020 Thank you. I posted videos many years ago using my own footage and movie editing programs like Snappy, so I basically understand editing and posting; just not sure how to do that with the FC1 FR files. I have Windows 10 and there is some kind of Windows movie making program in our gaming computer but I haven't tried using it yet. But it sounds to me like W10 will work and that's encouraging. Will check it today. So, it's pretty much like it was before? I can edit the FC1 FR files with Movie Maker or the like and the result will upload to Facebook or my account at Youtube? If that's correct; sounds like I'm good to go. Thanks for the vector; I think I can make it from here. I'll sound off when I've got something to see. Prosit!
J2_Oelmann Posted July 15, 2020 Posted July 15, 2020 If you have an Nvida graphics card you have shadow-play inside your Gforce experience. Use that to catch your flight recording inside IL2. Then use Windows moviemaker to arrange the scenes.
Todt_Von_Oben Posted July 15, 2020 Author Posted July 15, 2020 Our gaming computer does have Nvidia GForce but when I click the desktop icon I get a tile that says I don't have an Nvidia account. I'll look into setting one up and accessing shadow play; thanks. Earlier in this thread, J5_Daedallus explained how to do it in Windows 10 with Movie Maker or the like; which I have. I've made and posted videos (years ago) and understand how it works; I followed Daedallus' instructions and they are just like every other video I've successfully posted online. Should have worked but I'm doing something wrong. When I open the Movie Maker format, I'm able to insert stills and video clips from my computer (jpeg, mp4, etc.) into the editing format. But I don't know how to get movie maker to look into FC1 for the FR files. I've tried copying a Duel files and folders from FC1 and pasting them into a new folder in Pictures. I can access it through Movie Maker but MM doesn't recognize the file type. I'm not sure I'm even selecting the right file. I PM'd J5D about this but now it's on the board. Where do I find the right files in FC1? What are they called? How do I upload them to Movie Maker so they will be recognized? I feel like I'm missing something fundamental but don't know what it is. Tried what I could think of. No joy. Thanks for the help. I'll keep working on it.
Wanderfalke Posted July 15, 2020 Posted July 15, 2020 (edited) I think what you need to do is play the Fr file in il-2, then record it with a recorder like windows 10 (not the same as Windows 10 Movie Maker) or nvidia. Then use that footage in Windows 10 Movie Maker to edit. J37_Daedallus Posted July 15, 2020 Posted July 15, 2020 Sorry I was afk until now Yes to what Wanderfalke says Once you have the FC track how you want it, record it in Windows 10, for me it saves as an AVI file in a folder called captures in the video folder. So if you don't have avi I recommend getting it (free). Then when in Movie Maker you should be able to select the file you want from the above location (if you renamed it - if not it is the track file number and date) Let me know if this works, if not I can talk you through it on discord or something similar cheers
Todt_Von_Oben Posted July 15, 2020 Author Posted July 15, 2020 Thanks all. I've tried every way to get the files from FC1 into MM and can't get it to recognize the files. Giving up on that route. I didn't know about Windows 10 Screen Recorder. Reading up on it now and it sounds like it will work. Will try that when I get back on the gaming computer. I figure that's going to work but if not, I think I can do it manually by (1) playing the FR in my gaming computer; (2) recording that playback on a separate recording device; (3) uploading that video file into a folder accessible by MM; and then (4) go ahead to edit and produce a final copy. One way or another; I'll make it work. But I think it was the tip about the W10 Recorder that did it. That oughta work. We'll see. (Hopefully.)
Todt_Von_Oben Posted July 16, 2020 Author Posted July 16, 2020 (edited) Success. Thank you, gents. I need to work on refinements but basically got it working. Posted my first efforts at my Dogfight Diary page at Facebook; open to the public. Hope this link works. ADDIT: This is the link to my Facebook page where the video is posted but for some reason it looks a little blurry when viewed at Facebook; sharper and clearer here. No idea why. Also, this was done with Movie Maker. Our gaming computer also has Video Editor; maybe a few more bells and whistles. Will try that, too. I'm liking where this is going and will probably buy one of the better editing programs for making videos of this and other things. Very nice, thanks for the help. Todt_Von_Oben Posted July 16, 2020 Author Posted July 16, 2020 (edited) THE ANSWER: In case anyone comes to this thread with the same problem I had, here's what works: 1. If you have Windows 10, you also need a screen capture program like SCREEN RECORDER and a video editing program like MOVIE MAKER or VIDEO EDITOR. (They're free but you can spend hundreds if you want something exceptional. Either way; get 'em.) 2. Fly FC1 and record your sortie as a Flight Record. 3. Play the FR back on your monitor. 4. Record (as FR plays) using Screen Recorder: Windows Key / G opens and closes the recorder format; Windows Key / Alt / R starts and stops recording action. It records whatever is on the screen. 5. Save the newly-recorded file to a folder; mine turn out as MP4 and that's pretty much universal. 6. Open Movie Maker, Video Editor, or the video editing program of your choice. 7. Access the newly-recorded file in its folder; insert it into MM or VE; edit and save final version of MP4. 8. Upload the new MP4 of your sortie to the Internet: here, Youtube, Facebook, share, etc. DONE! There ya go. I had help finding out so I'm paying it forward here. Hope this helps somebody. Prosit!
