I'm thinking about a new monitor, and I'm quite partial to grab a VA panel (I have a TN right now). It will only be for flight simming as this is all I do on my pc right now. I'm curious to know what you guys think about this, especially if you changed from one to the other (also VA to TN)?

I'm looking at new monitors too. All the different panels are just one of the myriad of confusing stuff about making the buy. My basic understanding is that TN panels are more responsive and have less input lag, whereas VA and IPS panels have better colours and contrast but aren't so responsive. This is an old article but the relative benefits should be the same.

https://www.gamersnexus.net/guides/1890-panel-comparison-tn-ips-pls-va-crt#:~:text=next panel type.-,VA Panels, between TN and IPS panels.&text=VA has more advantages over,brightness%2C and better viewing angles.

TN panels are hyped for gaming a lot because high frame rates and response rates make a difference in competitive twitch shooters. In Il-2, when you need to spot and ID enemy aircraft, monitors with better colours and contrast are going to be better. Even the fastest dogfight doesn't depend too much on twitch response and having an extra ten FPS probably doesn't make the difference between victory and defeat. That being said I have seen people claim lower latency/response times or higher FPS makes them more competitive in a dogfight, so it may be a matter of preference.

I am looking at IPS/VA panels for preference when getting a new monitor just because I want to get a better picture and contrast if I can.

yup, as RedKestrel says above - in general, TN is for fps (actually refresh rate and response time) but gives up visual quality to gain it (more for competitive first person shooter games where twitch movement is extremely important), IPS is for image quality (considered best overall colors), VA has very good picture too while not quite the quality of IPS (in general), but is known for the best blacks and good contrast.

TNs least expensive, IPS most expensive, VA in the middle.

...as a quick simple overview...

Thanks guys, I was hoping somebody would step up and say it was such a game changer going from tn to va ?

Guess I'll spare the money until I really need to change it...

If I were to choose a monitor, I would pay more attention to reviews of specific models with test data rather than generalizations about panel types. I have found that there is enough variation within each category to make many broad characterizations unreliable.

Indeed, thats what I think I will do instead. Now, I just have to discover if the reverb G2 would permit me to use my glasses ?

Test data unfortunately can tell you only just objective data (and you have to trust the tester did a good and objective job). As an example, I expect that 2 ms GtG is better than 8 ms, but perhaps the latter is not noticeable (at least to the average user, or anyhow to me). And how good is it to have 125% of sRGB, when 99% would be just as acceptable? I mean, the list can go on and on...

I had Acer Predator Z35 for couple of days. I think it had a VA panel. At least in that monitor there were horrible ghosting. The black and white cockpit instruments were ghosting a lot when ever you turned your view. Annoying as hell.

I returned that monitor to the shop and got a monitor with IPS panel.
