[80 years ago today n]ew British carrier Illustrious is working up and currently anchored at Bermuda. A stiff wind over the flight deck prompts the launching of training flights of Swordfish and Skua aircraft. Unfortunately the wind then drops, and the aircraft do not have enough fuel to wait for the carrier to build up steam. Since there is currently no airfield on Bermuda the aircraft to attempt to land back on the carrier. The Swordfish, with their lower landing speed, manage without incident. The Skuas on the other hand, do not fare so well. Two end up in the water and a third manages to get airborne again after having the landing hook torn off. The pilot crash lands it on a golf course.
