Keybindings: TM Target software vs 3rd party vs in-game

I'm a new player and I've got the T16000M bundle arriving tomorrow (stick, throttle, pedals). While I haven't gone in-depth on this topic yet, what I've gleaned is a mix of solutions - What should I use to map my IL2 Keybindings to my Thrustmaster HOTAS?

Should I exclusively use only one of - or a mix of the following:

  1. TM T.A.R.G.E.T software,
  2. A third party tool such as JoystickGremlin,
  3. The in-game Settings panel.

If a mix of the above can someone elaborate on how and why?

If only one of the above, why that one, what does it do the others can't?

I intend to play exclusively in VR so want to get all my key interactions mapped to the hotas so I can avoid the keyboard where possible :)

i don't think additional programmability needed/necessary

Just plug in your hardware, set up the in-game bindings, and go flying.

Having more layers of software between the game and the hardware just adds unnecessary complexity unless you have some specific requirement that can't be configured in-game.

I vote for 3! :yahoo:

Ok, so I guess based on that I'm hoping the T16000m sitck+throttle+pedals with in-game bindings only will give me all the control I need for 2 engine aircraft? I'm aware the stick doesn't have a pinkey switch, so there's isn't a 'doubling' function for each button per say.

I have the FCS system without the pedals.  It has a lot of functionality. Example key binding forms below. :salute:

Start with the option nº 3, if later you need something different, like profile exclusive for a given plane, modes... then try TARGET, or Joystick Gremlin, etc.

Ooh that's nice. Thank you!

I unboxed my stick today, haven't plugged it in yet. But opon holding it and giving it a wiggle I am very surprsied how stiff it is to move. Coming from my old x-52 which glides much, much easier. A little concerning right now, but I'll see how it translates in game....

Yes, the FCS joystick has a firm feel that requires getting used to. :coffee:

Yeah that firm feel has kind of always been TM's trademark.

Option 3 should be OK. Only if you need a mode switch to get more functions on one button the other will be better.
I've put in this suggestion a long time ago to the dev team since I really want an option to assign a button to be used as mode switch in game.

Thanks, guys' option 3 is working out just great so far for single engine.

I'm getting used to (only two sessions) the T16K stick now, it's strong recentering and stiff now can be rather precise with a linear roll and pitch curve and I'm starting to like it.

The throttle though....I definitely prefer my old X52 throttle. The glide is 10x better and smoother. Mico-adjustments aren't possible with the T16K throttle because of how sticky and jumpy the mechanism is. Also the lack of idle/AB detentes is a bummer though I knew that before purchasing. The hand grip/the way your hand rests on the shape of the hardware is better on the Saitek throttle too. With this throttle my hand is cocked back much more as if i'm about to push a door open, which after some time gets uncomfortable.

I reduced my throttles drag to next to nothing to get a easy smooth movement. Still, use what works best for you. :salute:

How do I do that?

It's covered in the manual. Requires loosening a screw inside the Throttle housing. Easy to do. :coffee:
