So of course it's not a good idea to do it. But let me explain: I want to move to VR rather sooner than later. My PC is totally out-dated so I want to replace it. Available money is of course limited.

So the HP Reverb G2 seems very promising, it's within my price range and I'm willing to wait for it's release in autumn.

If I would need the new PC it today, I would get a RTX 2070 Super* or 2080 Super. But as I only need to replace it when the Reverb is released I have some time left ... Maybe enough time for the RTX 3080 release supposed to be in September!

However it might not be possible to get my hands on a new 3080 right after the release due to limited stocks. So I might end up for a few weeks with a new Reverb and an almost completely new PC but still with the old GTX 970.

Is it hopeless or is there any chance of running the sim with it at mimimum settings, low resolution and low fps?

* is the RTX 2070 Super even good enough for the 2x2k of the Reverb?

Il2 is vr optimised and Reverb runs just fine. Rtx2080s is your option as I assume you play dcs also, 2070s is what I currently use and its not sufficient to play dcs sadly.

Also cpu has to be ryzen7/9 32gbram minimum as it has to prep frames for both eyes.

Id get rtx2080s/1080ti now unless you want to wait for new gen hardware.

I don't have DCS (at least for now). So in that case 2070S is good enough for IL2 with Reverb and I should invest on faster CPU and RAM instead of 2080S?

Price difference between 2080 and 2070 is a lot of money and some people claim that 2nd hand 1080ti is the way.

That said, other components are as important as the gpu itself hence further budget prioritization.

I suggest using a pc builder website such as cyberpower etc and ask the builders/sellers for an advice.

Indeed, I usually prefer to buy the cheaper GPU and replace it earlier. So it sounds like a 1080TI or 2070S is a good enough choice and that I don't need to rely on the 3080.

You can probably run Reverb with IL2 at low/medium quality on 2080.

However, currently there is no hardware on the market to run Reverb at high quality with IL2, by which I mean no-reprojection, constant 90Hz, Ultra shadows/High clouds, both HDR, and SSAO turned on (I am speaking from personal experience as an HP Reverb and RTX2080Ti owner).

So for you it may be "good enough" or not, based on a personal choice, but regardless you should have 30-days to return your Reverb free of charge.

One thing for sure: you will need 3080Ti (and possibly even 4080Ti) to run at high settings I just listed.

You don´t need to take the decission about the GPU now. Just wait until the VR device arrive.

For now, you could concentrate your efforts in upgrading your PC for IL-2 VR and get the most of it in monitor (ie: some overclock, maximize RAM frequency, game settings).

Regarding GPU don´t worry about chosing one or another, they will basically limit the amount of supersampling you could apply. It is very easy to upgrade GPU, just sell the old one and go to a new one.

Of course you can run a 970 with the REverb but you will need to apply a lof of sub-sampling factor to reach 90fps or 45fps with motion reprojection.

Thank you for the opinions so far. I realised that as well: none of the (soon) available GPUs will allow maximum settings, so any choice is viable. You will only gain some 10% or 30% more performance but at a much higher price.

Reverb G2 is supposed to be available end of September. Good to hear that there's a chance of testing the Reverb with my rusty 970 already. So this removes the pressure to get a new GPU in time and I can just decide what's viable when the time is right.
