Got the 3700X and RAM installed, cables are plugged in - properly I hope -  and cable management is a solid B+ I think. Waiting for my replacement NVME drive to show up today and then the 2060 Super goes in and then it's plug in time and see if the thing posts. If it does, I'm gifting an airplane tonight as thanks to the tech gods that watch over fools and little children.

One thing for sure, I love this case. Lian Li Lancool II. $150Cdn, and it's super easy to build in. Comes with 3 fans and lots of room in the back for the cables. Haven't figured out how to attach the RGB cables for the front panel, but that can wait.

Nice build. Let's hope that replacement SSD doesn't get stolen.

As far as I know, that motherboard lacks the 3-pin addressable LED header, so you'll be left with the manual control. For power, it connects to the PSU SATA.

IT WORKS! ?

The NVME wasn't delivered but I installed my Crucial SSD and Win10 loaded right up and here we are, I'm on it now. I might ask you about the front panel RGB tomorrow, but at least the Wraith cooler has the RGB going and that's pretty cool. Can't seem to get my Norton installed but that can wait until tomorrow. Can't wait to fly on this thing.

One must not keep the tech gods waiting, I said I would gift a plane, and gift a plane I shall.

Building a PC is fun. From hours of browsing benchmarks and videos about hardware, to shopping for the parts, and then installing everything, to the first boot. It's always fun.

Then lots of tweaking, benchmarking  and trying your favorite games on the new machine. It's all fun and you learn a lot about your computer.

Cool build. Love that case. :good:

I think that's a blessing in disguise. I know this is controversial in certain places, but you really don't need antivirus. Unless you try to do extremely inadvisable things on the internet, it usually doesn't protect you any better than the built-in Windows security features.

I've never used it on my systems. The degraded performance, chances of system instability, nuisance, and questionable data collection practices make it unattractive, especially on a gaming system. Not to mention the cost.

Other than Windows Defender, neither do I.

And I set exceptions in Defender for my games I run regularly.

I do though practice "safe hex".

I've been a Norton fanboy for years. Between downloading TB of Mongolian yak fetish porn, and the day to day hazards of the web, I like having Norton and a VPN running full time. And I just renewed my subscription to Norton a few months ago, so I'll at least use it for now.

You mean Grindhouse Mongolian yak fetish porn obviously. Otherwise you're just a pervert.

The big knock on Norton (or it has been in the past) is that it is a relatively large system hog compared to other options.

The NVME drive arrived un-stolen this time. Finding that tiny little ******* screw for the standoff was a pain, but there it was amongst the pile of boxes and wrappers and twist ties. All in all pretty easy to install and set up in Win10.

Putting my unlimited net to the test and DL 180GB of DCS. I'm going to try dragging and dropping 50GB of IL2 from my old HDD.

Looking forward to some flightsim action with cores galores and 32GB o' RAM. This is a build aimed right at FS2020, but IL2 and DCS are coming along for the ride.

Are you heading towards FS2020 as well?

I would have been happy with an SSD, but I figured if I could get even 2% faster load times with FS2020 on an NVME, which is rumoured to be a 150GB+ install, I'm taking it.

Oh, I'm headed there eventually, I'm just curious to know how it goes, particularly with regard to your performance in this sim.  Anything else is bonus.  :)

True dat!  Still have to switch over IL2. And I forgot to hit "open beta" in DCS preferences last night while downloading, so I still have multi-GB of stuff to load up. Gonna fly after work.

Curious to see what going from an older i5 to a 3700X will accomplish in IL2. The single-core in this thing is supposed to go to 4.6Ghz, I'd imagine that will give me some improvement over the old 3.6 max turbo. Might get 130FPS instead of 115, I don't know. I saw in some videos that sometimes the differences seem incremental.

Oh well, work is cancelled this morning, the guy I work with is "elsewhere" for the moment. Maybe work this aft.

The morning off, what a shame.

I installed the HDD from my Win7 rig and Win10 picked it up without a hitch. Pulling IL2 onto the NVME now. Just might have to fly a bit..

Bloody hell! That’s more expensive than in the Uk and we’re used to getting it up the backside?. You could get an evilbay RiftS for that sort of folding.....

I know, it's nuts. But I'm going to look at the Delanclip that Red Kestrel suggested.

CanadaOne, you can look into TrackIR from this place based in Saskatoon. I got my TrackIR there  a few years ago with no problems. It's listed at $225 CAD and add on for postage.

With the 3700X replacing the i5-6500, and the 32GB RAM at 3200mhz over 8GB at 2400mhz, I'm seeing a solid increase in FPS, hard to say exactly, but it's noticeable and very smooth. And I noticed a lack of frame rate drops. It really hangs there in the upper numbers.

DCS is night and day. The Channel map, for example, loads up much, much faster, and is fluid and enjoyable in situations that made my old rig crawl and die.

Canada can you please list out all your system specs?

I’m starting a new build as well and trying to figure out what all to get. Already ordering that same case.

You're gonna love that case! It's heavy though. The glass doors on both sides add a lot of weight, and there really didn't need to be a glass door on the back. I got it for $150 but I think it's gone up.

Specs!

AMD 3700X

MSI B450 Tomahawk Max motherboard

32GB (8x4) Corsair 3200mhz RAM

Lian Li Lancool II case

2060 Super 8GB EVGA (two fans)

Corsair RM750X Gold power supply

Crucial 500GB SSD (boot)

1TB XPG 8200Pro m.2 NVME drive (for flightsims)

1TB prehistoric HDD (for Mongolian Yak Fetish Porn)

Win10Pro (going to buy a cheap key for $20 soon)

The RAM was the cheapest 3200 available on Amazon. The 1TB NVME drive got great reviews and is a lot cheaper than the 1TB Samsung 970. $70 less maybe. I bought the video card last year after saving up. That was my big ticket item. The power supply was not cheap but it was available and it's good. Most others were sold out. The case got great reviews and it it was suddenly available for a good price and I grabbed it right away, lots of others cases sold out. The motherboard also got great reviews and was available for only a bit more than normal. (Lots of parts shortages because of the plague.)

I might have gone with the 3600 (not X version), but the price was stupid high, and for about $100 more I could get the 3700X. Sips power at 65W and comes with a good cooler with fancy RGB lights, and I read that FS2020 is going to want a lot of cores, and this rig is my FS2020 build.

The whole thing was about... $2K-ish. And it's my rig for the next few years. No more cash for PC stuff.

(Except maybe a Warthog flightsick.)

You can get a lot of CPU power for pretty good prices this days, from both, Intel and AMD, but it's a pretty bad time to buy a graphics card now. The top performer was out for two years and didn't drop at all in price. We have new GPUs coming out in the fall,  not only from  Nvidia and AMD, but Intel is also coming out with a Graphics card. And all of these promised big performance gain. Over 50 percent in some cases.

If you can keep your card for a few months, until September-October, you will be able to buy a lot more GPU power for your money, or Get what you want to buy now, at much lower price.

Here's a fresh article from Tom's Hardware talking about this:

Just saw your post.

The card I have now is the card I will have for a while. Unless the money tree starts dropping fruit, I can't see spending $1000+ on a video card.

But I'm happy with my rig. I've never been as close to "hot rod" as I am now.

I take terrible pictures:mellow:

I know you already have your graphics card for a while. :salute:That message was for Cujo. He's building a new rig.

Cool rig you got there. All this rgb lighting on the new parts does make for an interesting light show.
