Virus scanner is off, running as administrator, changed install path to something shorter. In about 20 attempts its gotten past this point ONCE and then got a failed to update error.

Although an installer should check this, are you sure there is enough disk space?  The installation process may need substantially more space than the game's installed footprint.

If the disk is nowhere near full, try deleting whatever has already been downloaded, then try again.

If that doesn't work, you may want to check the integrity of the disk/SSD,  using Defrag or some other tool.

There was a bug when was happening awhile back. You had to go delete a file somewhere in the folder.

That's the extent of my knowledge on the subject. There's probably a thread in the bug section.

Hello RoostaCruelRIck

I have the same problem as you each and every time there is an update. ( most players don't have this problem ) And I have tried all the different game installation locations but none solved my problem. So, for my computer setup, what I have found out is that the files located in the  'updates' folder are somehow the cause, as they conflict with some others files and thus the game will not complete and the 'update failed' message appears.

Specifically if you make changes to the view / settings (F10) it somehow relates to the files in the updates folder. So I make backup copies of these three files

#1.  Input ( key bindings)   #2.  snapviews (camera views)  #3. startup.cfg (graphics).

And then replace them when the update completes. In this way,  I restore my view , graphics and bindings to suit my individual plane requirements and game settings. Because the game 'update' reverts those files to the default position / settings. (in my case)

So,  in your case  (and for me always)  there are 2 options.  ( I always do option 1 )

option 1..........-delete the contents within the folder "updates"  [ 1c\IL2\updates]
-start the game.
After that you should start the process of updating the game.
Wait for the process to update the game.

Restart your computer and once it has rebooted.....  run the game.

option 2.-........Uninstall the game and be sure all game files are removed.
-Download the installer from the tab "Download" in your profile on the IL2 website
-install the game
-start the game using the shortcut on the desktop or file launcher.exe from the [1c\IL2\bin\game]
After that you should start the process of updating the game.
Wait for the process to update the game and run the game.

2 TB with 1.6 TB free the other drive I tried is a 1TB SSD with 241 GB free, no matter what I try it gets to 5.76 GB downloaded and stops

Another stupid remark. The "allow the computer to turn off this device" setting on the power management settings for your network adapter? Or the advanced settings for your power plan in use on the computer, thinking the ones for hard disk and wireless adapters (if using) here. Doubt these would be having an affect as, you know, they are in use, but remember reading something about these (particularly the first setting) when I was trying to troubleshoot something long time ago.
